Exclamation Go Pro Hero 3

I'm looking at getting a GoPro for some upcoming trips and vacations and wanted to know what some people thought about these. I've seen some mixed reviews online but would still like to get one.

I've got the Hero 2 with most of the mounts. I think they're great. I've used it for skiing, wakeboarding, sailing, mountain biking and have stuck it on the side of my car as well!!

The quality of the footage is fantastic, better than any other camera of it's size, and so easy to handle as it's all on an SD card.

If I was you, I'd save up and buy the Hero 3: Black Edition. It's got everything and is wifi enabled so, assuming you've got a smartphone (and the GoPro app), you can preview what you're about to record or watch it live as you're recording, using the wifi network that the camera creates. I've heard the range is pretty good. Furthermore, you can fully control all of your camera's settings through the GoPro app.

The range of mounts is good and the sticky pads are ridiculously sticky!! They look a bit average but are so so strong!!

Let me know if you'd like any more info.
Cheers, JB.

Thanks for the feedback. The Black edition is the model I went to Best Buy to get but they were sold out. I've seen some reviews that say the software and wifi for the Black edition have some problems but I'm willing to give it a shot for the trip. Glad to hear the mounts are strong. I'm going deep sea fishing and would really like to get some footage without breaking the camera.

I'm looking into it as well, black edition is $399...the silver is $299 and the white is $199. The main diff is the black is 4k compatible and it will come with a remote.

That's what I've seen as well. Have you found any stores in your area that have the black edition? All the stores around me are sold out.

How durable are the cameras (i.e. would you get the extended protection plan from Best Buy)?

This is my video with 2 GoPro 2 cameras. One's mounted on the front splitter and the other is on the boot, just under the rear spoiler.

The camera's are awesome, I've got two, want to get another two or so

Would you say the camera is drop resistant to a certain extent? Would you recommend insurance for it?

I wouldn't use it without the case, even if you drop it, the case would take the hit, not the camera.

would anyone with experience say the Hero3black is strictly for people that post process all their videos? most of the comparisons with the Hero2, the Hero2 looks way better for some reason. I'm sure the Hero3 will smoke it if you can edit every setting, but sometimes i don't want to do all that just for some dumb snowboarding videos of my friends.

can anyone chime in? thanks!

I had the Hero 2 and sold it, scooped a hero 3 white as soon as they came out. The new form factor is great. It makes the old one look like a bulbous piece of junk. The white edition is essentially the same as a hero 2. Same specs and video modes. Wifi is a nice but the iPhone app, while it does work, is crummy. Poor UI, not easy to use one handed, and it's slow as hell. The buttons are way too small and there is tons of wasted screen space everywhere. It just plain sucks. For basic start/stopping of the camera it gets the job done.

Battery life is also still a weak point. You *might* get 2 hours recording if you're lucky and you'd better remember to turn the cam off while not recording. The camera buttons are more robust and it looks/feels better in all ways.

I think the white edition is a good value at 200 bucks. It shoots 1080p, but I usually use the 720p(60 or 30fps) simply because it looks fine and 1080p makes it a bitch to store or edit the clips because of their size and bitrate.

I haven't used other action cams but the goPro is widely considered the benchmark. I also haven't seen the silver/black editions in action but they had better be fawking amazing to justify the price.

I bought it from wal mart and got the 2 year accidental insurance for 29 bucks. I couldn't believe they offered it. I clearly asked. "If this flys off my car and I run it over and it turns to shards, you will give me a new one?", and they assured me yes.

The 4k on the black edition is 15fps. Think animated gif. Utterly useless.

pretty much, however I think the black is also better in low light condition...virtually no noise compared to the silver

I've got the Hero 3 Silver and it's pretty sweet. I just don't think the increase in price was worth getting the black over the silver.
