Owner of my BMW dealership has an M1. Actually claims it was the first one sold in the US. Who knows if that's true or not, but the car is incredible. I had my E91 in for service the day they delivered it and had it up on the lift for inspection...
Here's what he got rid of around the time he picked up the M1... Cleanest damn 2002 I've ever seen. No clue what he sold it for but apparently he regularly turned down offers for $50,000, so I'm sure it was more than that. Like others have said, there's hundreds of other cars I'd rather have for $250,000+, but to each their own. |

I'm just guessing the figure was hyperbole, but being fair, you could commission the design and one-off manufacture of a replacement part for less than $16k.
Paris Photo came through LA not too long ago and had Warhol's M1 art car on display. I'm an idiot for not taking oodles of pictures, but anyway it's pretty cool to see in person. http://www.complex.com/art-design/20...mw-m1-art-car/

Everything you mentioned is a mass manufactured crap box (relatively) with 0 significance. Any of those cars start a depreciation free-fall the second you start them. This car is an epic and important piece of automotive history. Its irrelevant though. This obviously will end up in the collection of an ultra-high net worth collector. Normal people (meaning anyone not worth millions and millions of dollars) really don't have any kind of realistic perspective on acquiring what is essentially a $300k museum piece. What (relatively) poor people would do with $300k really has absolutely no relation to whether or not a well maintained classic is "worth" its asking price. With $25M I'm sure most of us wouldnt take a 1962 Ferrari GTO either. But the people that buy them would consider $25M a *bargain* for the right one. The garage this car will go in will cost more than most of our houses... LOL I cant even begin to understand the thought process of people that look at cars like this and somehow view them through the lens of normal cars, daily drivers, normal people, what they would do with $X, etc... It just makes no sense. If it helps, maybe consider that *most* people would look at an M3 and say what a "waste" it is and how they'd *much* rather have their condo paid off and a nice practical used Civic that will get 50MPG and run forever with like $10/yr maintenance. As ridiculous as that sounds, saying "$100M for a Picaso??? F THAT! Id rather buy a stack of comics and a fat mansion!!!!" is equally ridiculous.
