Do you think the MacBook Pro name is lame?

Is it just me, am I being resistant to change in clinging onto the fantastic name PowerBook?? Or is the name MacBook Pro just outright lame?

I understand what Steve Jobbs said and also the reason to clearly differentiate the Intel laptops from their lesser PowerPC brethren, but the name still sucks in my eyes...

What do you think?

MacBook Pro sounds like it might be on the Golden Arches value meal. Can I get a Big Mac with that? Powerbook sounds just right.

You read my mind, I don't know why they didn't find another name that rolls off the tongue so well, and sounds like a beast. PowerBook as a certain sense of authority behind it. MacBook sounds like a kid's toy.

I have no problems with them renaming it, just not such a shitty name.

Well, when they get the weight down to 4 oz., they can call it a Mac Quarter Pounder.

I'm a little more ambivalent about the name game. I currently have a Powerbook. MacBook Pro is alright, I guess. I can think of worse names: MacDaddy, MacTheKnife, Mac-Aroni.

Think of it this way: You could either be using something called a MacBook, or just another one of those dull, boring little boxes. MacBook is already growing on me. Marketing-wise, it's a great idea in that the product is now clearly defined as a Macintosh.

What I find amusing is TV shows, or commercials where someone is using a PowerBook, but the glowing Apple logo is (often badly) covered up. Maybe it's just me, but I always notice when a Mac appears on the big screen, or on TV --- like last night in 24.

Someday, the rest of the world will wake up and realize the Microsoft/PC combo is far inferior to the Apple/OSX duo.

JamieA, i totally agree. whenever Jobs first said the name, i thought i just misheard or something and was waiting till he says "intel powerbook" or something in that sense. when i then saw "MacBook Pro" written on the machine itself in place of "PowerBook G4" my smile dropped to zero. until, of course, he started talking about the specs and revealed what a beast it's going to be...

yup, but definitely a lame name. my guess would be the iBook will become simply a "MacBook"

I agree, the machine is so good I can overlook the name, perhaps I can put a sticker over it or something

I understand the marketing reasons for differentiation from the PPC range, and getting Mac into the name... perhaps it was the best one, better than Mac2Go I guess...

I love seeing the Apple hardware on the bigscreen. What is funnnier is when they are using one of those dull little boxes doing dull little things, and they cut to a screenshot and it is OS X

I like the current logo... I do have an old rainbow logo sticker tucked away for safe keeping though. From when I got my Macintosh Classic Plus... now there is a real blast from the past... wrote my honours thesis on it, and it served me well... aaah, The Functional Properties of Non-First Normal Form Relational Algebra. There's an Oprah Book Club best seller if ever I heard of one

I doubt they would bring the colored Apple logo back. it was used during an era when design aesthetics weren't an issue. Today, the emphasis is on appearance & design and the clean logo works well. The colored logo certainly wouldn't go well on the front of an aluminum MacBook, iMac, or desktop system.

i also highly doubt they would go back to the colored logo. i don't think they're gonna go back to anything from the past, they are always ahead of their time. people are just starting to see that now...
