I wrote 914, not 944. The 914 had flat four (except for one model) was mid mounted, had a detachable roof (the 718 had no roof at all), and was a road car instead of a bespoke racecar, and was positioned under the 911. So to me that makes for a more suitable name.

The 914 would fit nicely, but from a marketing standpoint, the 718 is better.
