Totally disagree. The brand, and the manufacturer, are responsible because the price is "Suggested" (the "S" in MSRP); dealers are totally free to set prices above or below that figure. Will it taint the brand? I doubt it, because it's been going on for decades ... and in this day and age of easily obtained information and geographic comparison shopping with a much wider net, it's probably actually better than it used to be.

Heck: for some brands, the geographic issue is much more serious not only because of regional markup/markdown (and the very real possibility of losing significant revenue because of it), but also because of grey importation. Range Rover comes to mind in that case. Is that hurting the brand? Not really so far ... but in the long term, yes: I think it will.

I love how people hate 'stealerships' when cars are getting marked up, but it's okay for them to sell below invoice.

Must not have ever heard of supply and demand.

It's not like Target jacks up the price of pickles when their inventory gets low. This is why the Tesla model will eventually kill the retail car sales model. 90% of sales guys are glorified order takers anyway.

The sales model is still better for 99% of car sales. Of the last few cars I've bought, I have known more about the car than the sales guy, including pricing info.

Dealers don't make jack off of new sales anyway, but from warranty up sales, service and used sales. Market adjustments are just ridiculous.

I'm not disputing your knowledge relative to sales people. Most aren't very product savvy, and you're an enthusiast. That makes for a bad pairing. There ARE guys out there that know all the fine details and specs, though.

When something is hard to get, but there is a great demand for it, it leads to inflated prices. This a basic rule of economics. It shouldn't be surprising that new, hard-to-get models sell for MSRP or above. That said, there's a point where it becomes unreasonable. But if someone wants it bad enough, that's what you do to get what noone else has.

Agreed, but in most situations, a few good dealerships will avoid the markups. One local dealer had a $10k markup on S2000's while another had none. I'm still trying to find a Focus RS near sticker though.

10K markup on a 25-30K non-limited production vehicle like an S2000 is what I deem to be unreasonable. 2 grand on a 40-50K with limited availability is another story. I wouldn't pay more than MSRP, personally.

The heavier 4WD car will be faster from a dig and around tight, slow corners, but the lighter car will be faster everywhere else. Although compared to the 570, the NSX really does have a big weight handicap, in the neighborhood of 600 lbs but not yet confirmed.

To car collectors, an extra $20k on a purchase like this might be equivalent to many of you guys spending an extra $2k to get one of the first releases of an M car.

There is seriously money out there in the car collecting world. Saw one post where a guy jumped in his jet, flew to a state, bought a GT3RS4.0, put it on a trailer, hopped in the jet, flew to another state, bought another GT3RS4.0, put it on the trailer, hopped in his jet, and went home.

Think about the people living in the mid west who have incomes that match the cost of housing in an upscale area. I am pretty sure that the only people in So. Cal living in an $500k house making $500k are outliers. Most people around here are paying 2-6 times their income for housing minimizing disposable income.

Making $300k living in a $300k house frees up a lot of money for toys.

on topic: I love the NSX and think it would be a great car to drive. I doubt that it will be quite the performer though. Why would all of the car publications not release any performance numbers? Makes me think acura gave them a nice clause in the release of their testing cars.
