Will Jaguars 'R' line over compete with BMW?

Why?

People bash Jaguar often, but why?

My parents had 2 S-type models in a row. The latter was the 4.0 v8. That engine was stellar. It had so much torque and power that it made the tank weight of the car feel less. That being said, all it was was an engine on 4 wheels. The interior was cramped, especially the rear. The plastic on all the controls were taken out of the Ford parts bin. The steering was light and empty. The suspension was wallowy.

I drove an R-type and while it had 100 more hp and much better brakes, it was still made up of the chintzy parts.

My dad went into the 300c with the hemi after the Jags and loves it so much more. Im not a fan of that car either but at least its holding up pretty well and I think it looks better.

Laughing out loud at jaguar biting off of honda. I wonder where vtec crossover occurs in a jaguar type-R.

The same place it intersects the Volvo R line. And Saturn has the S line right? Guess R and S are the raciest letters to associate with "power".

Jaguars are now some of the most reliable cars available, ranked right up there with Lexus, despite public perception to the contrary.

The use of aluminum in the XJ and XK also mean that they are MUCH lighter than the equivalent 7 series and 6 series. You'll see the same thing in the new XF / S Type replacement.

And finally, the new XK is a truly beautiful car, much more so than the ugly 6.

I can't disagree with you on the old people comment, though...

My brother has an XJ Super V8 (the 7 series equivelant). He also has a Mercedes Benz S550. He constantly claims that he likes the Jag a lot more. Different strokes for different folks. I will say that the Jag looks and feels a million times more luxurious inside.

I think most people compare the S-type if they are cross-shopping rather than the XJ. The XJ is in another league when it comes to the Jaguar line, they apparently put all their money into that and the XK(which to me is absolutely gorgeous).

However, I think the main focus in BMW sales is the 3 and 5 series which is compared to Jags X-type and S-type. Both of which never really got great reviews and are built with subpar materials.

Agreed. The X-Type is a bit of an embarrassment. Essentially a reskinned Ford Mondeo, but somehow it doesn't handle or ride as well as the car its based on and is much more expensive (although of course we don't get the Mondeo over here). And the S Type is really showing its age now.

No. People who buy Jags do so for esthetic and comfort reasons. Not performance. Volvo has decided to discontinue their R line -I would not be surprised to see Jag follow (unless their new owners have new aspirations for Jag).

PS - I find the Xk to be boring and the 6 series beautifull - the 6 has sold so far far in excess of BMW's own expectations-so judging by its commercial success the market agrees with me. The old Xk never sold in great numbers and certainly not in the numbers that the 6 series is selling......

One must also take into account the fact theres probably 6 BMW dealerships to every 1 Jag dealership. If its not close, people wont buy.

I think the XK looks like a Ford Taurus coupe...

The XJ's have always been beautiful though, full aluminum body, great interiors, just the epitome of luxury IMO.

Anyone else not feeling the bug-eyed nature of the new XKs? I always thought the old XK's were some of the classiest vehicles around, as still is the XJ. Maybe it's just me though...
