Older BMWs that are safe by today's standards?

When do you think BMW's arrived into the safe by modern standards era.
I really don't like any new cars and was thinking about an early 2000's 540 or something of that era

How do you think the safety of that era is compared to say a 2015 3 or 5 series
I know cars in the 60's or 70's are death traps but when do you feel we entered the modern safety era

Thanks for your opinions
