Mazda teased a sporty new concept for the Tokyo Motor Show and the company wasn't kidding as here are the first pictures of the Vision Coupe Concept that come to us from Wheelsage.

Set to debut alongside the Kai concept, the Vision Coupe is a stylish four-door model which has an aggressive front fascia and a massive grille.

There's no word on what resides under the long sloping hood but it could be something pretty powerful as the wheels appear to cover a high-performance Brembo braking system. Of course, you probably didn't need to look at the brakes to notice as the car also boasts a four-tailpipe sports exhaust system.

Other styling details include a panoramic glass roof, hidden door handles, and tastefully restrained metallic accents.

The upscale styling continues in the cabin as drivers will find themselves surrounded by premium leather upholstery and elegant wood trim. Elsewhere, there's a stylish steering wheel and an infotainment system which appears to span nearly three quarters of the dashboard.

Details are expected to be announced shortly but the company has previously said the concept will help to "define the next generation of Mazda design."

I'm a big Mazda fan as I have owned 4 of them so far & looking for another Miata to make it 5. They need something fun to go w/the Miata. This something fun needs to be fast, though IMO. No more Mazdaspeed anything is really disappointing. I don't normally keep cars for a long time, but this is my 2nd MS6 & I have had this one for almost 5 years and do not see myself selling it unless Mazda came out with something fast & fun that made me have to have it. They need to get back to zoom zoom!

I'm thinking it's a straight 8; two SkyActive 4-bangers mated together...

I think its a nice design. Not realistic because it will never pass European pedestrian crash standards. Love the wood in the interior.

You both may be picking up on more than you realize, or it's just a coincidence.

Fun fact, Franz von Holzhausen was the Director of Design at Mazda from 2005-2008, when he jumped directly into the Design Director at Tesla, where he still is today. Call me crazy, or call it confirmation bias, but I do see similarities in Mazda styling & Tesla styling from time to time.

Take the side profile of Mazda's 2006 Kabura Concept and the side profile of Tesla's production Model 3, knowing that both of these were drawn by the same guy. 2 door and 4 door of a similar side profile?





Another interesting piece is the 2006 Kabura's panoramic windshield that curves to form the roof - this was a design feature included in the Model X, again designed by the same guy:





It feels like it wouldn't be too far off to say there may be styling cues/ideas overlapping between Tesla and Mazda in some cases. Then again this guy also worked on the Solstice and the New Beetle, so maybe I'm just going full conspiracy theory on this. Either way, fun to think about
