Suggestions for protecting yourself in a vehicle?
My wife's job is located such that she has to drive through a rough area to get to the highway. She frequently has to deal with teenagers trying to make a buck by "offering to wash her windshield" (usually by making it dirty first). She tries to nicely signal declining the offer, but a recent hothead smashed his squeegee handle on the side of her car when she didn't want the window cleaned.
She's now thoroughly freaked out about driving through this area. Does anyone have any suggestions of non-lethal devices to install to help get rid of someone who attacks her like this? Preferably something that wouldn't requiring my wife to open a window. I was thinking installing some sort of loud alarm would help, although they seem to be illegal to use while the car is running for reasons of keeping such noise exclusive to emergency vehicles. I've found it surprisingly hard to find something online, which generally suggest to me that the law discourages such measures.

Stuff like this happens daily here. Just simply ignore them. Not like they going to try to hijack the vehicle.
Tell the wifey to take a alternate route. |
