Interesting. I guess it’s just a cost saving thing. I don’t dislike the look, but definitely prefer the traditional weave. That Pagani Tricolore is

Actually the woven stuff is the cheapest to make, the heaviest and generally the weakest too. Many woven products are actually just a cosmetic top layer over a less finished looking product like the Lamborghini stuff. Of course that just adds more weight.

I don’t think so. Traditional CF construction is incredibly expensive, difficult and time consuming, though very strong and light. It’s still a cutting edge, ultra-high Performance material.

After some quick Googling, it appears that forging is a much faster, easier, and cheaper process, and is more flexible in what you can make.

However, it is unclear to me how it compares in terms of strength and weight. I am seeing some articles suggesting it is not as strong because the fibers are not oriented along the load.

https://www.quora.com/Is-forged-comp...ber-techniques

Other articles say it is just as strong, but not as light. Anyway, interesting stuff. I’d like to know more.

I suppose the forged stuff may actually be heavier. I was thinking more of the nano tube style and less cosmetically pleasing stuff that's used in F1, bicycles and the lot. It's a lot lighter and stronger than the old school, glossy 3k stuff.

Wow I’ve never even heard about Nano tube carbon fiber. Looks like more Googling is in order.

I like the forged carbon look. Traditional carbon lay is sooo overdue for a change.

I read that the forged carbon is not as strong as traditional though. Not too sure about that...not willing to put my steering wheel trim at risk of breaking from all of the rotational gforces when im drifting.

The look reminds me of burled wood. I don't mind it, it's different. But it doesn't look like carbon fiber because we are so used to seeing the woven fabric. There are different patterns and weave sizes, so you're not bound by the typical 1x1 and 2x2.

Your describing the wet laid stuff that's cheap. The dry carbon (prepreg) is lightweight and strong and expensive. I have a lot of dry carbon bits on my Lotus. They're very light.
