Question about Adderall.

I've taken it before and they seem to work pretty well in the sense of helping me focus in school, not go to sleep, pay attention, and do my work. I play sports everyday ( mainly basketball) and I was just wondering if there were any health risks by consuming Adderall and playing basketball while on it. Thanks.

technically i dont know...but i know at least half a dozen friends of mine and myself included have taken it regularly two or three days before midterms and finals for 4 or 5 years now without any noticeable issues. i think the potential side effects or whatever you wanna call it might become an actual issue if abused or used often

I figure I'll chip in my 0.02 since I'm graduating in May w/ a PharmD. Adderall is basically an amphetamine, meaning they're CNS stimulants. You have to be aware there's side effects with every drug known to man. With regards to taking it and playing sports, basically since it's a stimulant, it's going to increase your BP and cardiac load by itself a little bit. Normally it shouldn't be enough where you would notice, but if you're playing a sport and being physically active and already giving your heart a workout, I wouldn't really say I'd recommend it. Cardiac issues are a fairly large part of the more serious side effects associated with amphetamine salts (ie. Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta). If you're looking for that extra edge of focus while playing a sport, I suggest something else.

I didnt clearly state my question in my post thats my fault.. What I meant was I'm planning on going to my Psychiatrist to see if they would recommend me Adderall because I lose focus alot in school, sleep, cant pay attention, etc, etc, etc. But my question was concerning if there were any health risks in taking it and playing sports because I play basketball everyday. I'm not planning on taking Adderall for basketball LOL its to help me focus in school. I just wanted to know if it would be safe to play basketball on it.

ahhh ok lol. I thought you were looking for some performance edge or something.

As for your question, basically I'd say it's fine. Where I work, half the town's kids are on ADD meds and they run around like chickens with their heads cut off with no problems. What I would do however, is make sure you don't have any cardiac issues, for instance LVH (left ventricular hypertrophy) or family history of heart disease like mitral valve regurgitation or arrythmias. If you know you have a heart condition, or if you have hypertension, then I'd have a concern. The reason I say this is because with Adderall, if you have pre-existing cardiac abnormalities, you have to look at the benefit vs risk. Basically I would have your psychiatrist check with your family doctor to see if there are any contraindications to you starting a stimulant. If your doctor OK's it, then you should be fine.

If you do start it though and while during sports or at any other time for that matter you start feeling palpitations, like your heart is fluttering or feeling like your heart beat is not normal, I'd stop the Adderall and call your doc about it.
