WOOHOO - Got my student loan for my flight training

I have been a private pilot since 1999. I have started my instrument training 2 times now and had to stop both times due to lack of funds.

Well I finally have secured my student loans so that I can get thru my CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) rating and start teaching others to fly.

So I need the following ratings... Instrument, Commercial, and then my CFI in that order.

Once I have my CFI, it will be a "on the side" gig and I will do it part time while keeping my M-F career.

Anyways, just thought I would share.

Congrats! I got Private a year out of high school. Didn't go to college right away but started flying. It's sad to see where GA is going sometimes- with all of the requirements now and the airlines lobbying for user fees. There is nothing quite like taking off from a tiny airport in a Piper or Cessna and having that feeling of freedom.

Good Luck buddy, and when you get your CFI maybe you will give me free lessons to get my instrument license

Congratulations, and good luck. You made me think back to a time, years ago, when I had the thrill of flying F/A-18 Hornets from the USS Theodore Roosevelt. Man I miss flying...

Not bad. Good luck!
Go for CFII -- it should make it easier to find a job. Then, work on your Multi...

(FlightSafety Graduate 1992, CFII/MEI, have not flown the airplane since 1999 )

Thanks.

I would have liked to make it a career change, but I am too advanced in life to take the financial hit now. I have a wife, mortgage, and a 3YO daughter.

For you private.

For all the ratings thru CFI, depending on how quick you learn and how often you fly, more like $20K - $25K

If you get in multi time and CFII and want to get hired by a carrier for the puddle jumpers you are talking $35K - $40K. I haven't looked it up lately but you probably start somewhere around $20K - $30K a year doing that.

Then you are employable for more than being a CFI, but you still start at the bottom of the pay scale to pay your dues and build flight time.

Ok for a single young guy or girl, but not so great for a 34YO with an established career, a wife, house, and child.

Not to worry. You are right at the average. Almost nobody does it in the 40 FAA minimum.

COuld be 18k...depends on you
I don't think you'd need more than a few hours in the air, and ground stuff, so I'd expect it not to be too bad. As I recall, CFII was about $2200 when I too kit, but that was in 92/93...
