Makes no sense from liability, maintenance and availability issues.
I would wager because the department pays for maintenance and gas, maybe by mileage?

In the 90s we had a crown vic as a family car, went over 1,000,000 km in that thing!

When I first got on the job in the interest of saving money and trying new things we got a couple of Chrysler K cars marked for patrol. They were destroyed in 6 months, we also had a Dodge Omni....it wasn't marked but was used for plain clothes work, another POS that didn't last.

Thanks. I travel on the 101 a lot and will have to watch for those.

A long time ago in the late 1980's, Connecticut State Police as well as the FBI used Buick Regal T Type cars (basically the same car as the Grand National) for unmarked cars. Pretty sneaky.

I have a 84 Omni GLH currently. It's a hoot to drive, it is a lot of work to keep it tip top since it wasn't the best built. Anyone who drives it has a smile on their face. Mine is mainly a rallyx car but I still drive it on the street as well.

In the city of Falls Church, VA, the police department used Volvos exclusively for 10-20 years in the 80s-90s. Wonder if it was connected to the fact that the largest Volvo dealer in the area was HQ'd in FC? Owner now a member of Congress, strangely enough.
