Will commercial free TVs ever happen?
I'm sure a good few of us loathe commercials breaking up our favourite programs and reach for the mute or better still the freeze frame button then skip the next lot of commercials fast forwarding to the continuing program. Commercials pay the TV companies to advertise their products it is well known but what is your opinion of a way forward to free us from the drudgery of being lumbered with commercials. There was talk some time ago of having commercial free TVs though that's passed with seemingly even more ads now plaguing our screens.

It is called streaming services. Or paid subscriptions on Youtube.
I don't watch normal TV anymore, and I can't stand commercials.

Don't y'all have a national telly tax? Time to take a lesson from those chaps in 1770's Boston, and toss your televisions into the Thames!
On this side of the pond, broadcast TV is losing viewers every day to streaming services. Some of those have no commercials, and others have a premium subscription without commercials for those willing to pay up.....

No television for us.
No streaming subscription. We watch very few “moving pictures”. We rent a la carte movies from YouTube or Amazon Video, or watch a video here and there from DIY YouTubers. There are a few commercials on YouTube. Easy to scroll away, change windows, and hit the mute. Overall the recommendation is to “turn it off”. |

TV is only background noise that I pay an absurd amount for monthly, but it's mostly just to get the blazing fast interwebs. The only time I watch TV/movies is when the girlfriend is over in the off chance we aren't running our asses off.

I have a 10-minute attention span. No movies for me, and no streaming subscriptions. I do have Amazon Prime for the free shipping, and have used the streaming feature to watch the antics of Jeremy Clarkson and friends on occasion. I also own an Apple TV, and in all seriousness only bought it to serve as a HomeKit relay so that I can control lights and stuff when I'm not home.....

We have Virgin tv with streaming like netflix, from Amazon Prime etc which includes the internet and free land line phone calls on weekends and that incurs the BBC tv licence tax which isn't that much.

It’s those commercials that bring you free programming, it’s the delivery system that costs you +$175 a month. Subscribe to cable networks or streaming and you pay not to watch commercials.

That's right,at the end of the day you have to pay (quite a bit)? more to stop the commercials or to have them cut down.

I repaired 1000's of TV's during my career. Sold them, too. The last thing I wanted to do when I got home is watch TV. Even today, I find very few redeeming TV shows. Better things to do.

I own 2 TV's. One hasn't been turned ON in months. My wife watches the news on the other one. I watch about 30 minutes of "news" a few time a week and Jeopardy. That's it. On the rare occasion I watch a movie, it's Hulu on my iPad, while sitting on my patio.

I only have the motogp video pass, plex and iptorrents.
Well, I guess technically I have an antenna connected to the living room TV but its really there so I could get local news in case of Armageddon. I haven't switched over to that source in ages. I think last time was to have a super bowl party or something. I dont watch much TV but when I do its usually on the plex server. Then on the weekends (or more likely monday evening) ill carve out time to catch up on the previous weekends motogp races. I havent seen a commercial since the superb owl party.... |

I would suggest watching Social Media on Netflix, they use the phrase "if it's free, you are the product".
