So I guess this thing is still a drift and burning. I cannot believe they’re not making an effort to put the fire out so they can tow the ship back to a port. That means it will continue to burn until it sinks doing lots of fun damage to the environment beneath it. Then the shipping company is going to have to pay salvage operators to go get that crap off the bottom of the ocean. You would think they would just pay people ahead of time to jump on there and put the fire out.

From the picture below you can clearly see that a good chunk of the side of the ship simply melted away due to the heat of the fire. And you can see the heat damage on the rest going all the way to the bow. Every level, it seems. Obviously a complete loss. The ship isn't likely to sink, though. The damage appears to be above the waterline. It'll get towed somewhere and scrapped. But it's an environmental/toxic nightmare, for sure. |

Yeah, but as close as these cars are packed in there in one of these things, the close proximity of plastic, rubber and all sorts of other fuels can create an unstoppable inferno just the same. Somewhere it was listed that magnesium was also manifested on the ship, so it's just as possible that it could be as bad without any EV involvement.

There is an incredibly high likelyhood that the ships and VW insurance carriers are making a mandatory preservation of the vessel to ensure its able to be investigated for subrogation or liability clauses. Also important to note this is easily a half billion dollar loss minimum.
