Why so many M3's on dealer lots?

I must say I am surprised at the inventory levels for new M3's.

BMW of San Diego's has the following M3's in inventory and these are cars they received weeks ago.

11 convertibles
3 coupes
7 sedans

Were they trying to sell them above sticker? The economy has changed, and high Hp cars like these aren't in vogue unless you have a lot of disposable income. I think a lot of people are also looking at the 135 or 335 with chip instead of the M3. 21 M3s is a lot of inventory even for BMW of SD. Two of my brothers friends bought their M3's from there when they first came out, and only one was previously on list w/ deposit. They have been piling up since day one.

economy is shit? Gas is expensive? More people who think about house payments and put off buying mid life crisis toys? These are just a few reasons, I'm sure there are more silly ones as well.

my 2 good freinds are both GMs at Honda dealerships here in DC. They both told me their v6 accords arent selling as well. They are selling civic hybrids by the loads as well as 4 cylinder accords. The average american cannot spend 500+/month for a car payment.

Oh and BTW all the Toyota dealers around DC have a 3 month wait list on the Prius. Take a look now how many you see on the streets...more often than I see civics I see a prius.

Besides the fact I have had my 2008 335 (with 9k miles) listed for 3 weeks on every known car sale website (autotrader, cars.com, craigslist etc) and have even listed the car around 4-5k BELOW KBB I cant sell my 335... for 37-38k. This is a sign of the times to come... People are not going to be purchasing high HP cars, or cars that get 20-22mpg or cost $40k+. Take a look, I bet even the 1 series is struggling, I have only seen maybe 2 since they were delievered here.

Why do you think its hard to believe the M3 would fare any better considering its alot more $$$. Not to mention like everybody else stated, the economy is crap and people are finally realizing that gas prices will soon reach the point where they cant afford their homes anymore.

But seriously, people are finally looking to the future and where gas prices may be. The gas price bubble has finally burst and SUV's will be a thing of the past. I think the US will slowly move towards a European standard of small compact 4 cylinder cars, not by choice though.

i'm thinking its partially because there was such big talk about the M3 the dealers thought everyone wanted one.
The stocked up the economy went down.
The BMW lovers that bought the M3 wanted to build their own and not buy one off the lot.
Also, Maybe some people backed out on their orders so now the lot is full of them

Ha, Specialized and Trek bikes are selling better than M3s. I went to my local shop for a top end hybrid trek bike and it was out for 08 models. End up with a 08 Specialized bike. According to that MSN article, M3 buyer demography is multimodal and I bet the younger crowd who were getting by aren't buying anymore.

Convertible M3's are already out?

With the price of a nicely-fully equipped M3, you can almost make a 20% down payment on a decent house in SoCal (~$500,000).

I actually started a thread a few months ago right around the release of the new M3, questioning the timing and how the economy would/will play into the sale of such a highly-anticipated luxury item.

I guess the proof is in the pudding.......I met a guy over the weekend who got $1500 off MSRP on an '08 coupe.

Did he barter on the sedan just for grins? If so, how much. Thanks.

I got into a sipper right before all the poo exploded in the oil market. Good forecast you made.

My car is now harder to get.

Not sure about the extent of his bargaining, but I think the economy definitely had something to do with it. It's wierd, I saw 4 M3's at a local meet this Saturday but none of them really wowed me.....maybe I'm getting immune to the new M3

There are a lot here too. But the black/red sedan at one of them sure has me dreaming while trying to go to sleep at night.

HA. I remember when it first came out I went over to my local BMW dealership and they had a fully loaded AW coupe going for $100K. Now they are giving discounts? How quickly things change in a poor economy.
