What happened to the double-kidney-grill at the front?? It HAS to be there to go with the roundel, or it can't be a "complete" bimmer!!

If the Mini incorporates this tech, Ill be all over it. A for sure sale on my part. The only thing that would a problem is paying over sticker. ie; Prius, and other Hybrids. But aside from that obvious fact, Ill be getting one.

i thought Mercedes was f#@%!g stupid when they released the new "smart" car and i was like BMW will never do that ( all happy and confident) and that what distinguishes bmw from mercedes benz and all those "major" car companies, MORE POWER AND PERFORMANCE FTMFW.
i mean if you can't afford gas prices , you should not be driving a bmw, it was not made for that, it was made for "sheer driving pleasure " not "sheer great gas millage "

^ that's pretty ignorant ! most of the BMWs sold around the world (excluding North America) are the fuel effiecient/economical models because people in Europe and Asia can't afford V8s because: A) they're expensive B) fuel prices are high

i think this car looks pretty sweet !!

They're making this car so that they can comply with the new US C.A.F.E standards congress just passed so that you can still enjoy a gas-guzzling X6 or M5...

Thats a pretty ignorant statement, and if it wasnt for cars like this you wouldnt be able to have more power since BMW would be in violation of fuel standards and would be heavily fined.

And for people who were throwing up on its 105hp

Think about actual weight savings for a change.

Remember this car, 1988 Honda CRX made all of 105hp weighing in at about 2000 pds, the car did a respectable 8 sec 0-60 and a 1/4 mile around 16.4, blazing absolutely not, but I can imagine that the specs will be close for the Isetta (hopefully a bit better) in a car that can get 100mpg that is NICE!

Yes there will be alternatives that are better hopefully hydrogen who knows, but this is a nice car and I think it will blow the smart away (so far in looks it does). I am starting to see alot of smarts on the road now obviously its not a bad deal.

I would rather have this over a prius any day. Better MPG, better looks, and probably better performance.

They are going to need to change that design a lil' to get 100mpg while running petrol:

1. At speeds above 30mph, over 70% of the energy used by a car goes to overcoming wind resistance. Both of those designs look horrible from an aerodynamics standpoint.

2. They will probably want to run a Miller cycle to get "acceptable" performance. That means that they will need some pretty special control over the valves. That means electromagnetic valve actuation. That means the I2 developed for the 500 with a turbo.

3. They are going to want to minimize the size/number of radiators to manage aerodynamics and weight. Ideally they only have one. I'd suspect that they'll use ceramic coatings inside the cylinder head to increase heat rejection and use a liquid to air intercooler immediately after the turbo. Coolant loop will probably go IC, EB, OC.

4. Plastic body panels are a good bet as is an aluminum chassis IMO.

Hope they pull it off.

No they are not?? BMW has never been famous for gas guzzling cars, infact they have always been pretty famous for quick efficient cars.

The 2002 arguably one of the most famous BMW's ever was neither a high horsepower nor gas guzzler by any means, yet it was quick, handled very well, and was very efficient.

Another ignorant comment.
That was GM, Dodge and Fords mentaility in the 1970's. You could practically fit a civic/corolla of that era in the trunk of one of their Impala's, Granada's. LTD's (etc). While a civic recieved probably 10 times the fuel economy, it was much more nimble and fun to drive, the North American companies turned a blind eye to that, and continued to make heavy gas guzzling shit. Now look, whats your opinion on owning something that gets 8 MPG with fuel prices the way they are, all the while having to park one of those goliaths, abiet deal with the fact that they are slower then a pregnant sloth around the track due to their immense wieght?
Fuel will not last forever, an absolute moron would think it will. I'm quite glad that BMW is seeing this and changing their path now, so that when fuel become that much more of a precious resource: they'll be prepared to cross that road when they approach it.
