My girlfriend likes to cook some of the exotic Asian foods. The food tastes great but the smell stays in the house sometimes for days. We have tried to open the windows/doors as much as possible when she cooks, but it usually takes about a week to get rid off the smell. Even my sofa and my comforter smell like the food sometimes.

We want to buy a good air purifier / air filter, but there are too many options out there. The price range also varies greatly. Target has a cheap one for about 30-40 bucks and Sharperimage has the air ionizer thing for about $300.

Do you have any experience with a good air filter product?

EDIT: I just read your entire post and realized you've already looked at the ionic thing. lol I usually just scan thru posts.

UNless you have a purifier in everyroom (or bring it to every room and air it out) the smell will still be there. I usually just close all the doors and open up all the windows. We also turn on the fan (the one hanging over the stove). Just use febreze or lysol to eliminate the smell. Lysol is freaking crazy. I use it for my bathroom with glade plug-in and it basically kills the glade's smell too. haha kind of pointless to use both.

The only one I've had decent success with is the Oreck XL Air Purifier. The problem with ionic air purifiers, though, is after the ionic "wires" get clogged up with dust after a few months, they constantly make loud "buzzing" and "ticking" noises.

The sharper image Ionic Breeze is what i started out with, but I never noticed a difference in the air with it, and towards the end, no matter how well I cleaned it, it still made noise.

However, with the Oreck XL, it also has a fan which moves the air, which is a plus. The fan definitely isn't silent like the ads say, but it's about as loud as a computer fan, if you can deal with that.

However, as I said, the Oreck does eventually build up with dust, and the same buzzing and ticking problem results.

The best way I've found to fix this (and this works!) is to clean all the parts like it says with soap and water, but then blast out the unit (and the ionizer) with an air compressor. You'd be amazed at the amount of dust that comes out. And this also stops the buzzing problem for about a month. You'll have to clean it like this every month, but the air smells great!

The only thing that can clear air of odors are purifiers with activated carbon filters (usually just called carbon and/or charcoal filters).

Go to www.allergybuyersclub.com for tons of options. Some are as cheap as $100 and can do rooms up to 150 sq ft, depending on your needs.

The Oreck has no carbon filter (or pre-filters) so from my knowledge it shouldn't do so well in deodorizing the air.

I've experienced AustinAir Healthmates and Hamilton Beach air purifiers - both work very well.

+1 for closing all the doors to the bedrooms, and opening all the windows when you cook asian food (especially stir fry). Use the stove hood fan too to get most of the smell before it escapes. As for air purifiers, I use a Hamilton Beach one with a carbon pre-filter, which takes care of any odors that might have creeped into the bedroom. You buy air purifiers depending on the size of the room as well, and make sure you get a HEPA air purifier. It must specifically state that it HEPA rated. If you do some research on the net, the Ionic Breeze air purifiers do nothing for people, and there was a lawsuit with Sharper Image regarding the effectiveness of these things.

Like the guy behind Oreck has always been saying: if you can feel it pushing air, then it ain't cleanin' air.

The ionic breeze crap models barely even push air. There's no such thing as a silent air purifier - all the good ones will always be making at least some kind of slight noise if they're going to be pushing air around and only when you're pushing air around will you ever be cleaning the air.

...to what ever model air purifier and ionizer you plan to purchase, I recommend liberal spraying of febreeze or similar in and around the area. It should help...

The Living Air Classic, by Ecoquest International is the only air freshener that will really do the job you describe. Trust me, the Sharper Image unit is virtually worthless and the Oreck is only marginally better.

Ecoquest has been making their units for over 20 years and these units WORK. I have three of them, (you only need one in 3000 sq. ft. house). But I have one in my detached garage, one in my house and one in my designated smoking room. I smoke cigars and if you walk into my smoking room you would not be able to tell that I smoke in there. And cigar smoke and ashes smell nasty. LOL!

So, save yourself some time and money and buy the Living Air Classic, anything else is just crap. Seriously.

The units are sold by private retailers, so once you read up on the unit(s) on the Ecoquest website you can then use "contact us" to locate dealers in your area. The retailer will also be happy to demostrate a unit for you (And no, I'm not a retailer).

Squawks, the oreck actually has a charcoal filter. There's a prefilter, the ionizer, then the charcoal filter.
