The Harman Kardon in the G45 is much improved from the G01 IMO. Wattage is increased to 600 and there is a dedicated subwoofer in the cargo area in addition to the 2 woofers under the front seats. Bass response is much improved which was the weak spot in the G01. I haven’t played with the equalizer yet as the sound is pretty good with the base settings. Eventually I will tweak it.

For example, if you understand anything about audio, quoting amp power output without specifying the impedance being driven, is like one hand clapping, and pretty meaningless as the same amp will produce a different output depending on the speaker impedance being driven. BMW has employed a range of speakers between 2Ω and 16Ω, often mixing impedance within car. Hence, using a difference speaker impedance configuration in different models, can produce different power output from the same amp, it’s doesn’t mean better or worse lol. Also the RAM unit in the UK spec car is different to a US spec car. Last edited by avi66; 11-10-2024 at 02:07 PM.. |

I've only had my M50 for a couple days, and I'm no audiophile. But so far the HK sound system (with default EQ settings) does seem more impressive than the HK on previous BMWs I've owned or experienced. From the driver's seat, it sounds pretty rich with a slightly warm and bassy tone (which I like). Definitely not as tinny as on the G01. It's probably still not as good as the higher end alternatives--but I've been pleasantly surprised so far.

"Harman Kardon® surround sound system with 600-watts. This 16-speaker sound system includes tweeters, midrange speakers, and 2 bass speakers located under the front seats. This multi-channel system makes the car's cabin a colorful sound experience." |

Clearly for BMW UK the priority wasn’t to tell you about the speaker setup, but focus on the important stuff like illuminated badges. Be careful with BMW marketing and claimed numbers. |

15 speakers, based on the info from the spares catalogue you reposted, and anecdotal feedback on 2 x under-seat woofers both being present.
2 x tweeters deleted from the D pillar, which will increase “on paper” amp output as the D pillar channel is driving half the impedance (assuming still 4Ω spec) as there is no longer a tweeter in series with the mid speaker. So if comparing the same amp, but adding back the 2 x tweeters, the amp would have a lower claimed output for those channels. What’s the spec on the D pillar, and what do you mean by full range i.e bass and tweeter frequencies ? Do you have a link to the spec or actual image of the speaker ? Based on what we know, it does appear that the divide b/w the standard HiFi audio and the HK system is even greater in the G45 vs the G01!

if you look at the bmwusa website... it shows a 600w amp w the same speaker spec as the x5... yet the x5 shows a 464 w amp lol as does the HK website... so if the 15 speaker setup is true w the new wattage, they need to update this asap because at this point this is no longer a mistake but some sort of blatant misinformation...

The inclusion of dedicated SWs is also worth mentioning but as I said before, BMW doesn't really cater towards audiophiles! |

In the past BMW has published detail specification information, but more recently it’s become difficult to actually confirm what BMW’a marketing claims actually mean. The iD6 HK was “claimed” 600w total output, and I actually found the basis for that claim in ISTA. It was based on a target 4Ω impedance being driven on the 7 surround channels, but that isn’t the case when adding two 4Ω speakers in series, it’s driving 8Ω. This reduces the total amplifier output to between 400w-500w, which is strangely close to 464w number quoted in iD7 HK. Change of amp output, or just the basis on how the total output has been arrived at ? |
