Auto front PDC not working

Hi everyone. When I back up, the rear PDC sensors are automatically active. However when I enter my garage, the front PDC sensors do not turn on unless I press the parking button. This can't be normal. Every time I forward park, I have to press the parking button to make sure that I don't bump into any forward obstacles.

I'm thinking that I need to to toggle on front auto PDC in iDrive, but I can't seem to find the option in the menus.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The front PDC only auto activates when you're driving forward at very low speeds (no more than around 2.5 mph) and when the front obstacle is already in the yellow zone. Are you driving faster than that? If so, then unfortunately you do have to trigger it manually

Also make sure that the auto activation is enabled. It's somewhere under the Driving Settings. Though I think it should be enabled by default.

Based on my personal experience with G87, the front radar auto activation is very inconsistent. Sometime it turns on very early when I pull into my garage and sometimes it does not engage at all and sometimes in between…assuming the way I pull into my garage is fairly consistent, it’s just one of another software quirk. I’ve grown the habit to press that button every time I pull in tight spaces anyways.

Thanks for the responses.

I do have auto PDC enabled, and it doesn't turn on, even when the car is barely moving forward.

I guess I'll have to get into the habit of turning on the parking sensors manually. Too bad, my wife's M40i auto PDC works very well.

I think the front sensors need to detect an object to trigger activation.

Same with the MY22 X3M40i. I use the button every time I pull in the garage. It will flip on at a very low speed and when something gets very close to the sensors. Otherwise, I just press the button when pulling up.

Yes -- anecdotally it seems to trigger only when the obstacle is already in the yellow zone, perhaps almost at red. But it sounds like it's pretty inconsistent for some folks.

Correct - I believe the trigger is if the obstacle is 12 inches or less away from a sensor - but don’t quote me on that metric!

And, yes, it does not perform consistently IMO.

I spent a good bit of time with the Service Manager, some cones, walls, etc. at their dealership. I provided videos of the system sometimes working, sometimes not on the identical pull-in to my garage. The conclusion is that the sensors are inconsistent. I stopped using it entirely and put this on the sidewall and it works perfectly and no software updates needed!

go cheap and reliable - hang tennis ball to touch the hood edge or put a marker next to your mirror if close to wall or another object
