In 2009 Mercedes will launch a successor to the Mercedes CLK which Daimler will move up a notch to the E-Class level. The underpinnings will still be provided by the current generation C-Class, but with a style reflecting very much the new E-Class. We will see a preview of this styling in person in just a few weeks when Mercedes unveil the ConceptFASCINATION. The new direction of its coupe is an attempt by Mercedes to return the E-Class to the legendary status once achieved by the W124 E-Class generation.

As the C-Class is providing the platform we are likely to see a similar engine range which will undoubtedly include Bluetec diesel options and a hybrid model – an area which will account for a large proportion of the German automaker's sales in the future.

These shots caught by our spies show the E-Class coupe continuing its development and has shed a little more disguise. Close inspection on some of the styling lines show the similarities between this and the ConceptFASCINATION.

Pros:
+ Crisp, modern, and defined
+ Aggressive stance
+ Swooping roofline
+ Bold grille with fewer slats
+ We have hope for the headlights
+ That rear kinked character line should look good. Hope they don't tone it down.

Cons:
- Character line and overall profile feels too Bimmer-esque. Very derivative.
- Possible chrome strip on lower profile. Hope it doesn't make it to production (unlikely).
- Little hope for the taillights after the ConceptFASCINATION.
- Bland rear bumper.

Things to note:
* The overall look feels like a mix of Audi's S5 (profile) and BMW's E92 (at least in the character line and in other small areas).
* The front bumper should look interesting, and I see it has kinks similar to the upcoming Z4's (check underneath the headlights). Me likey.
* Also, note the LED fogs in the front bumper. Hmm...

seriously, +1 on everything loll. Here's the latest chops, I think if it looks like this it'll be great! The rear does seem a little bland though.

When may this be coming out?
They have a new SL on the floor at a MB store here in Dallas. Not bad.

You know.. I was just thinking the same thing when I saw these pictures.. seems like a lot of newer or upcoming cars have that sharp crease/character line through the door handle.. was it indeed the E90 that made it a popular trend or did BMW copy from elsewhere too? (actual question cuz I really don't know)
