and stole my 3 trash bags of aluminum recycling cans last night in the rain.....

I would have given it to him/her for free..........if asked........

Sorry, I just did it for my MMA training. I'll bring back the bags tomorrow.

All your questions can be answered after you find out whether or not your state has some version of whats referred to as a "castle law/doctrine".

If your state has some sort of legislation like this "castle law", once you would confront the intruder(s) or if you noticed they were armed themselves, if they attempted to attack you OR said/did something else to make you fear for your life or some other occupant of your house it would be open season on the person in terms of using a weapon to defend yourself. After you have neutralized/subdued the threat though, you have a duty to stop defending yourself. So you could initially shoot or beat them with a pipe, but after you shot them initially, you COULDN'T "curb" them, that my friend would be assault even if the person had entered your home illegally.
