It seems with TVs everyone has their own preference. I have LCDs in all my rooms, except my youngest daughter's (she is still rolling with a CRT). Now, that being said, I will try not to be biased towards LCD, but choosing a TV will depend on what you will use it for and your room setup. My brother-in-law just bought a new house with a well lit living room, he is now having big problems viewing his plasma. My LCD has zero problems with lighting. Picture can sometimes be better on nice plasmas over nice LCDs. However on my Sony XBR4 52 I have a much better picture than several plasmas on the market. When I do decide on a few models of TV, I always go into the store to view (keep in mind, stores usually have little natural light by TVs) and then I do Google searches on the model numbers. This usually brings out any recurring problems with TV. DLPs are fading out, but for the price they really had a great pic. I had a calibrated Mitsu, and the pic was outrageous. If your dead set on a plasma (not great for gaming or computer monitor) the I would check into the Pioneer Elite models. They are sweet looking and have one of the best plasma pics. If you're going off the old knowledge of LCDs having a shitty pic compared to plasmas, then you may want to go and check out a few new models. Blacks are better and grainyness is much improved (120hz models).

DLPs may be "fading out" but that should only matter if you're planning on buying your new TV in 4+ years instead of now. The big 1080p ones out now should be good for at least 5-10 years, and are quite cheap for what you get.
I still love my 50" Panasonic DLP after a number of years of ownership, and I haven't had to replace a bulb yet. As for viewing angle, unless you regularly watch your TV from edge-on, there usually isn't going to be a place in the room that you can't see it clearly from. I think people have this idea that it's like the old school 3 bulb rear projection TVs that had a very tiny viewing angle: lol!

This is maybe the BEST time to get a DLP. You can get them so cheap, and they will last with proper care. I'm getting another set for the house a Samsung HL56A650 - $1000! And once it's calibrated and ready to go, I don't know of another RPTV that will have a better picture. It's a shame DLP is dying out in RPTV because it takes up more inches, but thank God it's king for FPTV and it will continue to be. |

wow thanks for the responses guys. The reason I don't want a LCD is because of the following
1. They get unreasonably expansive past 50". 2. They have a "lag" problem in fast action movies. 3. I could get the 120Hz to fix #2, but again they add on the price tag, and I REALLY REALLY hate the unrealistic feel of the picture because it got too realistic (if that makes sense, like its trying too hard) Lighting is not really a problem for me, and i don't play alot of video games, my TV is used for 25% SDTV, 25%HDTV, 35%BD, and 15%PS3. I definitely have the space, it will go into a custom cabinet, so even if I get a plasma, the space behind it will be a waste anyways. You guys are throwing out some pretty expansive tvs man, by budget I meant around $2500 or so, I was set on the samsung PN58A550 which can be had for my price. But that was before we decided to move the TV spot so now I have unlimited room instead just above the fire place. Thats why Im thinking about DLPs. and for about the same price, I can get 73" DLP Mitsubishi...so ummm... |

I just bought a 72A650 (72" DLP Samsung) for my parents from Amazon for $2300, no tax, free shipping and 24 months interest free financing. Best deal out there IMO. If your room can handle a TV that big, it can't be beat. I've had a 70" JVC LCoS TV for over a year now w/no problems and the PQ beats everything I've seen to date after calibration.

+1 to the comments about a well calibrated DLP.
I have a Samsung 50" newer bulb DLP and a 61" LED DLP. Somebody mentioned the LED's being cheap and not as good picture. Having a direct comparison in my house I strongly disagree. The picture on my 61" LED DLP is just as excellent as my bulb powered 50. Viewing angle isn't really a problem as it was a couple years ago for RPTV's. I had a cabinet RPTV for a while and you could not watch it if you were more than 15-20 degrees off the center. With the DLP's at home I can sit in a chair quite a bit to the side and the picture still looks good. Samsung makes the LED models in a 61" and a 70 something. In addition to low power requirements, no burn in risks and excellent picture quality the DLP tv's are a very good value. I paid less than $2k for each of my TV's. p.s. the DLP's are not bulky at all. My 61" is something like 13" or 14" deep |

Now *IS* the time to buy a DLP - the price is awesome. The picture is as good if not better than LCD's and Plasma's (especially when calibrated), the TV will not be replaced for 5+ years (and moved into another room), and it's not bulky. The only down side is you can't wall mount them but they are pretty thin these days. I personally would only buy a Samsung DLP. Also, you can get it calibrated by pros who fly around the country and they charge between 300-500 bucks. A good place to start for information as well as getting quotes from people who calibrate - is http://avsforum.com - these people are the 'snobs' of home theatre. ________ CT70 ________ buy iolite vaporizer ________ Herbal vaporizer Last edited by stimpy; 02-18-2011 at 05:53 AM.. |
