european AWD diesel luxury cars

I know someone moving to france and knowing that I like cars, she asked me what car I think she should buy when she gets there. i'm somewhat familiar with european cars, but my knowledge is limited. I tried visiting manufacturers' french websites to look at the available models/configurations there, only I can't read french so that didn't turn out very well.

I'm just wondering if anyone here familiar with european cars and configurations would have any suggestions. Here are her requirements:

1. Luxury or semi-luxurious brand. Yeah she's a badge whore. Oh well.

2. Under 40k Euros, "the lower the better"

3. diesel engine

4. AWD

5. Must be a sedan or wagon/hatch/MPV and hold 5 people.

VW Passat 4motion
Citroen C5 (not 4wd but tres chic)
Skoda Octavia
Ford S-Max
Renault Laguna
Peugeot 407 (actually they're rubbish - don't get one of those...)

There are more but I must rush off. I'll think and expand my list later.

PS. French people only buy French cars. I've never seen such xenophobia when it comes to choosing an automobile.
