Calling IT gurus

OK, today I tried to connect to our patient management program at work that runs out of a shared "F" drive on the server. I get the error message stating that the computer (server) reached its limit and can not accept any more connections. We recently added a new Doc to our practice and three additional workstations. I did not even know that there was limit on the number of connections the server could support. Do we need a new server? (BTW, our "server" is just a PC dedicated as a server. I beleive it runs Windows XP proffesional). Thanks for any input.

The patient management software is probably licensed for some number of users. Once the number of users that sign into the software is reached it will not let others acess the application.

If that is the case it should be as simple as buying more licenses.

We made sure we have enough licenses (expensive too!) Right now I am able to access the program again. Could be a software glitch. It has a shared database that can be used simultaneously by everyone and it sometimes goes a little crazy. Thanks.

Not IT guru but curious. The questions are is the error coming from the XP server machine or the cnnection error coming from the application?, is your XP server running out of license as well when trying to get to F drive? Sound like a license issues but license to the number of connections to F drive on server or to the new patient management application?

Here is the other potential problem with client/server applications (depends on application). If you connect to the application and a network problem occured, the application might not have release you from it license pool (thinking you are still connected). You now have a runaway licenses that you need to clear/kill.

I'm not really a Windows guy, but I'm pretty sure Windows XP has a hard limit on the number of simultaneous connections (~10) to prevent this very scenario -- they want to up-sell you to Windows Server 2003 if you're using it as a server.

There's probably a registry hack or something to get around this (at least, there was for NT Workstation), but you'd be in violation of your license agreement.

In XP pro if you share a folder you have the option to "Limit" the connections to it. The default is "Maximum allowed". Maybe some one changed that to a lower number. Have someone check the share permissions of the folder.

I'll have to check the limit setting and it sounds like tintivilus might be on the right track. The program is not web based and the error message comes from my machine telling me that the server has reached the limit allowed. If it makes any difference, my machine runs Win2000 Prof. I guess in the end it may be a Windows license problem afer all.

Windows XP can only support 10 unique connections. Must buy Windows Server for application hosting.

Thanks, we'll probably upgrade to a true server with the proper OP. It looks like we out grew the present one.

I think E36_325i hit the nail on the head.

Not sure what part of Georgia you're in. If you're near Atlanta, we can help. I sent you a PM with contact info.

I never tried this but you can give it a try to increase the corruent limit without purchasing Windows Server.

If you chose to purchase Windows 2000 or 2003 Server, make sure you set the Per Server License to like 400 while installing the OS. You can also change this number inside Control Panel.
