In search of a gas friendly DD that's not diesel

I am in search of a DD that's around 20k that is not diesel. I know VW CDI (I believe that's what is called for their diesel lineup) gets a pretty good mileage but it's pretty hard finding diesel in california and I'd really want access to fuel whenever I need it (like a long D trip or so). So I am ruling diesel out.
I'd like about 30-35+ MPG since this is a DD.
I was giving some serious thought to Prius and Insight and they are the front-runners at the time, but just the thought of a boring hybrid... sigh..
Is there anything else I am forgetting?
I am planning on turning M3 into a weekend car in hopes of saving gas money and mileage since putting miles on the car just on commuting back and forth work, I think I can better use the miles.
Anyways, thanks for your suggestions!

Hardtop Mini Coop. 37mpg highway. Frugal and way more fun than a Prius.

I'd pick the Civic Si or Mini. Both great cars!!

I'm a huge fan of the Insight and Prius, but a Fit is a good choice if you want something that's a little more engaging to drive. The Corolla isn't a bad choice either. I've got no experience with the Versa, but it's probably a solid choice as well.

I'd take an Aveo over a Yaris. I hate them.

Uh, no?

B5 A4's are hella cheap, easily attainable for 20G's or less. They get pretty good gas mileage, styling is better than any of the above cars mentioned, and having Quattro even though he's in CA is still a plus.
