First time DSLR user

Hi, well just got my new dslr the other day and have been playing with various settings. Here are some of the "better" pictures i took. Being a complete noob at this, any advise from you veterans would be truly appreciated.

BTW: better quality pictures could be found on my flickr account:

Congrats and nice photos! I'm a total noob like you but I'm pretty psyched to start getting into the DSLR game. I literally picked up a Nikon D5000 yesterday. Cheers.

i was going to get the D5000 also (love the idea of the swivel screen) but i opted for the t1i instead since the majority of my friends have canons. but yea, cant wait to see your pictures!

Not bad. I would suggest you use a tripod for the garage shots and increase your shutter time. That will give you some more detail and get rid of the slight blur you have. Also, if you plan on shooting in low light, I would suggest spending $80 and get the 50 1.8 lens. Its a great lens (and a great lens for the price). Congrats and keep it up. There is a learning curve, but it is alot of fun. you will become addicted!

I think what is being said is you would have a better image with a longer depth of field (DoF). Your aperture is set too fast, so you have a shallow DoF. With a slower aperture, you will need a longer shutter speed and a tripod, but the added DoF would improve these pictures.

None the less, nice first effort. Composition is just as important as good technique. Keep practicing, and check this out: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=277439

AMEN my brotha!

To any DSLR noob, forget the program mode. Learn to use MANUAL. You can't even use shutter or aperture priority properly until you learn to use the camera in manual. By learning to use manual mode, you will learn what the camera is doing for you in aperture and shutter priority mode.

It's always good to have an inspiring photographer that does something you want to do. My personal favorite is landscape and wildlife photography. Thomas Mangelsen is someone I study in great detail.
