I know that you can make amazing pics with PS, but I was wondering how much PS do you really do on your photos? 50/50, 40/60, 0/100..... school is starting up in about a month for me and I'm trying to see if I can pick up a Mac notebook since they are know for there good photo stuff, but for all of you guys who PS, is a mac worth it? Just want an opinion.

Macs are better suited for most creative work except for 3D modeling/animation. But that's only because a lot of the software packages are only for Windows.

Most of my work goes through post processing. At the very least I'm color correcting in Aperture. For more polished work I definitely edit in photoshop. I don't think there's any [good] professional photographer that doesn't do post work on their photos.

I mostly shoot in raw, so everything goes to PP. I'm starting to realize that a marginal photog who is very good with photoshop can create better images than a very good photog who has no skill in photoshop. It's of course better and easier to get it right in the camera, but PS can save your ass sometimes... especially when shooting in raw.

I'm trying to remember what RAW does, I mostly shoot in standard or fine, but will check out RAW when I get a Mac.

You don't need office. Buy iWork and save $200. iPhoto is good for organization, but you'll find Adobe Lightroom works great for batch processing and lighter editing tasks. It's designed for compatibility with PS. If you buy iWork instead of Office, you can use the money you saved on Lightroom.

on iWork. Especially if you aren't planning on being an accountant or write documents for a living. Office is a bloated piece of crap. iWork opens and saves office files and is good enough for most people.

I prefer Aperture over Lightroom, but that's just me.

So iWork is basically office for Mac, so I can use it for writing papers and what not? Thanks for the info, it's going to be awhile till I buy one (hopefully w/in a month) since I got school bills to pay, and finding books w/o burning a hole through my wallet is going to be fun.

MACs are definitely much more multimedia oriented than PCs....and much more user friendly. That isn't to say there isn't anything not user friendly out for the PC, but MACs just come with that stuff pre-installed.

Mac is essential. I have 3 of them right now... well 2 cuz I gave one to my GF.
Might be worth it to you to wait till the new OS comes out (snow leopard is it now?) in a few months. But you can't go wrong with a Mac.

I don't do a lot of PP. I used to just keep pix that came straight out of the camera. However, I've since shoot in RAW so all the pix require a little processing. I usually use the program the Canon DPP program and adjust a few things (takes like 5-10 seconds each) and I'm done. On the other hand I probably spend more time looking for that perfect capture than most people would.

RAW format lets you adjust the image before saving it to a .jpg. Say you're white balance is off, no problem. Say you're a little over exposed, no problem. Same thing for under exposed, under or over saturated. Just lets you fine tune it before make it a .jpg or what ever file you save it as. It's kind of equal to the dark room if you were to develop your own film.

Yeah it doesn't take long and i usually don't have to touch the pic after that. Plus it helps me not get cluttered up with a bunch of files i'm never going to use. Cause if it doesn't get converted to a .jpg, it gets discarded. If you're mindful of composition and a level horizon it does only take a few seconds to make the raw adjustments.

Oh yeah, i'm on a mac too, Macbook pro. Totally worth it. I've had it on for almost a year and a half since i had to reboot because of a hangup.

I've got 3 MBPs (one of which was run over by a car and still works!!). Once you go Mac, you don't go back.
