ask other friends of yours if they know a guy or a place who'd photocopy books illegally. i know i am not supposed to do that but if people buy bootleg DVDs all the time, i dont see why i cant just buy photocopied books. i go a pretty shady little computer store run by middle eastern guys (great guys to deal with btw) and hand them the book that i want photocopied. they'll usually have it ready in a few hours. then i go ahead and return the book to the school library where i borrowed it from. i've been doing this for the past 2 yrs. wished i had learnt this little trick since my first year in college..

Psssh, my Tax book last semester was $300. Best part, the bookstore won't buy it back since tax laws change year to year and it will be obsolete....

Since my friends and I always study in groups anyways for tests, we just bought one book to share among the 3 of us for each class.

You know what else is crazy? You pay $150 for a book and at the end of the semester they will buy it from you for like $40. I've only sold 1 single book throughout college and that was only to a friend.

My grad school has textbook rental, which is included as part of the fees. So basically you just go pick up your textbooks at the start of the semester and return them at the end. But you get some old textbooks. A recent course on global technology referred to the Clinton administration as the current one. Just a tad behind.

Still, I prefer the rentals as most textbooks I never even opened.

my school has this thing where if the book is in demand they'll give you 50% of what you paid for it so its pretty decent i guess.

its the same for my school as well. i only sell certain textbooks back to the bookstore cos i dont get 50% for all the books. sometimes they only give me 1/4 of the original value. so i sell those directly to other students instead.

i am in Mcgill university btw... what college are you in ?

Books are great for you, especially if you are interested in the subject. Freshman and sophomore books are pretty useless. But higher level will be useful as reference in the long run.

I've ordered 10 or 15 books from abebooks and had no problems. BUT abebooks just gives a venue for individual book stores to sell online. You are actually dealing with that bookstore. That caveat aside, I don't know anyone who's had a problem.

It never ends, Im currently working on my Masters and it seems to have gotten worse since i last remember. I'm a huge computer geek so I have been looking online for college books that will load up on the kindle, so if anyone has any info then let me know....(It would be awesome to have all your books on the kindle)

This is true. You may be paying a lot for the book upfront, but you will most likely use them in the future as reference
