Don't sweat it OP, there'll be other trips. Being Asian, your friend's situation doesn't surprise me too much. My family isn't so strict, but I know some families can be.

On a serious note (not like that wasn't serious, but you know what I mean) I personally wouldn't have gone alone either.
Everything is more fun with friends/lover/partner/ANYONE you like!
yeah i feel you Monte about your Daddy...i did my time, 10+ years in the service, moved on and it's all good...

and you're right,,backpacking is one thing, but goin to another "foreign" country alone wont' be as much fun as going with a company,, be it one person a or a group...although it could be lots of tun too if you meet someone on that trip...

lol- cafe om, bia om, xe om- all kinds of om.

But yeah man, they're a little disappointed since they've been looking forward to it. Now all of a sudden, the last freaking minute, it's canceled. I felt bad but it wasn't really my fault. I just needed more time to think about what I wanted to do. Seriously though, if I had 2-3 days to think about it I probably would have gone by myself (since I woke up the next day kinda regretting not going).
hahaha..nah, i'm not talking about the "om" shiet...well, occasional "om" wouldn't hurt, but rather i'm talking about how you go back there, u see these poor and helpless people, u just feel bad and then u give them a little $$, and all of a sudden the whole freakin village comes knocking on ur door for charity...last time i went back there was 1995, and that's like almost 15 yrs ago, so i dont knwo what's it like right now..but i'd imagine there's still plenty of poor people there...

and of course when u hit the bars and clubs and stuff,,they know ur a tourist, and they'll jack up the prices..

and in ur case, u plan on smooching off the people back home and not paying them while ur there? hmm..idk...u probably dont want to burden them..but that's just me...trust me, unless they have an AC unit wherever they are, you do NOT want to live there..it's freakin hot and humid like a mofo..you will def. want a hotel, with AC and running hot/cold water...

oh and Tet is actually on Feb. 14th, Valentine's day..

Oh that's my mistake then- I thought it was end of January this coming year. But yeah I feel you, I'm a sucker when I see others that are less fortunate. I mean I wish I could help them out but I can only do so much. My aunt's bf does some work with the orphanages and he goes back to visit them every year. This time around I wanted to go with him too but it didn't work out like I had hoped.

About people jacking up the prices, that's very true. Some people are fine while the rest will try to earn a little more. That's why it's helpful to travel with a local (and asking prices up front).

As for mooching off of people, they won't mind. I mean I won't be eating with them 3-4 times a day but yeah they will cook food for me. They have money so believe me they won't mind- especially when I haven't seen them in forever and that they stay at our place when they come to visit. I love this one dish over there and told my aunt about it and here's what she said "let me know when you will land and I'll have it flown in for you so that when you get here from the airport it will be ready." Man I could have lived like a king for a month if I went. Goddamn iT!!!

That's if they stayed at hotels, going out and eat expensive food all the time. IMO there's no point in going to another country and eat steak or any kind of food you can eat here in the US (with the exception of a national dish like Pho).

Dang I think we should get more people together and have an E90post special in Vietnam! lol

hehehe..that's awesome dude! i'd love to have family and/or relatives like you..mine are all poor or just barely make ends meet, so when i do go back, my azz better be prepared to shell out...this is why i'm talking about 6,7 or 10K...but this time around though, i plan on going places..not gonna stay in saigon too long, ~1 week, then head up north, Hong Kong and Thailand a few days...dont have a lot of time off, so i'm tryin to squeeze in as much "sights" as i could...even though i've been to most of these places already, when i was in the Navy that is...
