Wow, there are a ton of variables to determining sizing. I'd strongly recommend finding a shop that offers professional fittings after talking to you about what type of riding you want to do (centuries, recreational, triathlons, etc). You'll pay between $50 and $100 for a proper fitting, but most shops will refund some or all of that if you buy a frame/bike from them. I'm 6'2" and recently changed from a 59 cm to a 58.5 cm effective top tube, and it's been a pleasant, and noticeable change.

The fundamental thing you want to get right is your position on the saddle, in relation to the cranks/pedals, once you find the right setup for that (and it takes a while if you're a novice) you can work on the other variables, like top tube length, standover, stem length, bar width, headset spacers, etc. Keep in mind that the type of riding you plan on doing will not change your saddle to pedal distance, but will likely alter your reach and drop requirements.

I'm 6', and ride a 58cm road bike. 56cm should be right for you.

I can't help with the shop question. I would suggest finding a place that can properly fit you to whatever ride you chose. (There more factors than just frame size that can affect your ride quality and comfort)

Listen to Red Bread... there is a lot more to it than height, weight and inseam. You can get a simple easy test at most bike shops (they should have something that pushes into your crotch from the floor and measures your inseam properly) that will give you a good idea where to start.

You're my exact weight and height! When I got my roadbike, I got a medium frame size. Works great. My DH bike is medium, too. Fits real well. I'd try a medium size and see how it goes.

Just don't go to Performance. They suck. Get an indy shop.
