You have to love that its only for the latest 3gs phones as well. Everyone else has to pay up to apple again for a new phone first if you dont have one.
Actually the iPhone has always had multitasking from gen 1. How do you think you could listen to the iPod app while running other apps or get text messages/emails without running them? Multitasking on other mobile devices is horrible. You run out of memory, apps get slow or crash, and the battery drains quickly. You also have a task manager to deal with. Apple wanted to get it right.

If you knew anything about the way they design/develop software, you'd think different. Apple's design philosophy has always been about quality over quantity. They focus on a good user experience, not bullet points that go on the box. The way they implemented multi-tasking is actually really smart. Some apps will still suffer, but in the end people won't end up with a crappy mobile experience.

And the reason you need a 3GS or later is because of the amount of memory the device has. The 1st and 2nd gen iPhones had very little memory which is why apps crashed more often at random. They just don't have the memory or processing power to handle multitasking elegantly. Ask any iPhone developer and they will say that decision is totally justified.

I'm willing to bet that advertising has almost nothing to do with why Flash isn't coming to the iPhone. Do you use a Mac? Flash is so slow and crashes all the time in OS X. When you play a youtube video in flash for more than a few minutes, all the fans kick in at full power on the Mac. Imagine how it will run on a mobile device with fraction of the power/memory of a desktop computer. And keep in mind that the iPhone browser renders webpages in full. A page with a couple flash ads would kill the browser quickly. And who will users blame for the crashes? Apple.

Actually, I could give a crap about multitasking on my iPhone. I haven't really missed it, except on a few games apps that don't save your progress. But other apps do save your progress, so that is more of a programming issue than a multitasking issue.

What I'd REALLY like (other than being able to have removable memory, oh and Flash! ) is:
1.) The ability to save files, such as PDFs, Word or Excel files, on the phone. Right now I have to email them to myself as an attachment, then make sure I don't delete the email. Probably an app for this, but I'm guessing it is kludgy....

2.) The ability to create various email folders to actually save messages. I can't stand having messages cluttering up my inbox....

Yea working with files (across apps and devices) is a big deal especially with the iPad. I know for a fact Apple is working on this issue. But like multi-tasking, they are going to implement it in a way that works well for mobile/touch devices, not just take what works for desktop computing.

I do all of this on my nexus one, save flash. That'll be fixed in a couple of months though, as adobe is releasing flash and air for android 2.1.

The iPhone 3G and below won't support multitasking- Jobs says hardware doesn't support it. I've has this for the last year or two jailbreak FTW. Honestly I rarely ever use it but it's nice to see that you can finally stream Pandora and answer a text message without a jailbreak.

iAds I still want to see in person but I am NOT thrilled about. I have a feeling that this will be implemented into paid apps as well which I'm not excited about. I'm staying at 3.whatever for now....maybe I can skip this whole upgrade

I use Air Sharing from Avatron. I got it for free several months ago. The base version is $2.99 now.

To date I only have PDF's on it, and it works pretty good. Scrolling is not as smooth as I would like on my largest file. But it's 1250 pages long and it still works. The document is a PDF print of an Excel Spreadsheet with around 60,000 lines x 8 columns.

I'll look into this one. Pro is priced at $10, but some of the reviews aren't exactly glowing....

I really want my Nikon D300 and SB-600 manuals in PDF on my phone. The hard copy versions are HUGE, and taking up too much space in my bag....

http://getdropbox.com. One of the greatest services ever. You get 2gb of storage free. Creates a folder on your Mac or PC that automatically gets backed up to their server and synced across any mac or pc you have it setup with. So whatever files you put in that folder are available on all your computers. You can access your files from the web and it saves versions of your files so if you screwed up a file, you can revert to an older state.

Why am I telling you about this? They have a free iPhone app (https://www.dropbox.com/iphoneapp) that allows you to access all the files in this folder. You can access your PDF's, images, and other docs and mark them for offline viewing as well.

I just signed up for DropBox, I like it so far! Thanks for the link! Not a complete solution (can't email a file directly, only a link), but workable for now.

I'm surprised how many people actually care about flash on a phone. On the iPad, I agree it's a big fail not to have it, but on a phone? If I want to look at an intense flash-based site I'll use a real computer.

I have an 8 core Mac Pro. Flash runs fine.

The fight is between Apple and Google over Apple not wanting Flash based streaming video players full of ads from Google on their devices. Or Flash based iPhone/iPad apps with Google ads in them. Hence, iAd.

And I have a 2.6 Ghz C2D MBP that should be able to run flash fine. Every time Safari crashes, it is due to flash. My CPU temps increase from 124 F to 145 F. Even my 27" iMac Core i7. The latest and greatest CPU from Intel and flash still causes Safari to crash. And temps go from 104 F to 115 F.

Flash sucks on OS X. I fully bet flash on the iPhone would suck battery life at the least.

All the major browsers work practically the same and they are all pushing for standards including HTML5. Youtube is beta testing it's HTML5 video player and many sites are slowly dumping flash because it doesn't work on the iPhone.

Believe it or not, Apple not supporting flash is one of the best things that has happened to the web. The web should be built and run on open/free standards, not with a plugin that's owned by a company who is just out to make a profit. I for one, can't wait for flash to die on the web and users who don't develop websites for a living won't even notice that it's gone.
