iPhone 4 in Korea
I'm leaving Friday for Seoul for the first time. I'm Korean-American and have my JB'd iPhone on ATT. It says it can roam at 2.29 per minute but I've been told that doesn't really work. Who to believe? I know Korea is big on WCDMA/2100 3G but I know KT offers the iPhone and its only made in GSM UMTS flavors. Can anyone verify their iPhone has been able to roam over there?
Also, Is it possible to get a global GSM SIM to roam on KT's network? I mean, if they let Rogers and ATT roam, who else will they allow to roam? I also know Korea must white-list your phone's IMEI to use their networks but is that only as one of their subscribers or also as a roamer? Where is this ridiculous fine line drawn? Ultimately I want to get some sort of Global Roaming SIM that allows better rates than 2.29... Or perhaps even free incoming calls/sms like most other carriers. I know there are global sims that work in korea but only for WCDMA world phones not GSM UMTS. Anybody? I'll be one of the very few people walking around with an iPhone 4 since they aren't sold there yet. |

from all my research:
iphone 4 will work under att as 'roaming.' in order to use another sim card under the major carriers (ktf/skt/lg) the phone needs to be under the IMEI registration, which is damn near impossible unless you buy another korean phone (like an iphone) and then getting the IMEI number from that by hacking... a lot of money just to use your iphone. my opinion: just rent a korean phone while you're there. hell, some of the phones are just as nice as the iphone. in the mean time, use the iphone4 as a mini ipad. have fun in korea btw. it's been years since i've been there and i definitely wanna go back. so much has changed.

sister has an unlocked iphone. it does NOT work over in korea. post above is correct, you must pay around $300 to get it workin in korea. we basically "rented" a crap phone and paid $20 bucks for a month. |

I don't think this helps, but the locked iphone 3GS will roam in korea (as well as all 2100 mhz 3g phones). All you have to is give att a call before leaving the country.
For the cost-conscious, it's best to just rent a phone at incheon airport. |

Install ultras0w from cydia and I believe that unlocks your phone.

Unlocked but is it on ATT Service? I think KT has an agreement with certain providers like ATT that permit the roaming. If you just have an unlocked iPhone with no service I don't see how that would work anywhere let alone korea.
