Question PC Gurus: Windows Is Not Booting...

i would get to the screen where it asks me if i want to boot in safe mode, last working configuration, start windows normally, etc (i pick start windows normally), it would get to the windows xp loading screen and the monitor goes blank and a few seconds later the comp restarts itself. once it gets to the windows xp load screen again it asks me how i want to boot and once i choose 'start windows normally' it goes blank for a few seconds and restarts; this cycles keeps going...

what can the problem be? help much appreciated, thanks guys.

This happened to me once in XP - I'm no expert and don't know the cause or anything, I eventually got fed up turned it off and when I came back later it worked fine - I did scans of everything and haven't had a problem since

do you have your xp install disk. I would try a windows recovery/repair and see if that solves the issue. It could be a virus and it could just be locking you out of the OS. If thats the case, you may need to re-format your computer.

AFAIK, bad sector on your hdd where your boot files are..

best way to check.. put that hdd as a slave on another pc and scan for bad sectors and viruses... if I'm right, you're better off with a new HDD..

Yeah, my old XP box would do that, too. Sometimes the bootloader gets corrupted, other times it's random other things.

Easiest solution is just to reinstall Windows XP. Just insert the disk when it's booting, hit F12, run the CD, and reinstall it. It should detect your previous version of Windows XP and simply install over it, preserving all of your programs and documents (but getting rid of your original Windows XP settings, so if you have any themes and stuff, they'll be reverted to original). I used to do this a couple of times on it.

tell me about it man. i run into problems time to time but this comp is about 7 years old now. i could build a new one, and i think its time, but i built this myself and i just can't seem to part with out . i still think it got a few years left in it as well .

right now i put the windows cd in & went in recovery mode and doing chkdsk /p & /r to see if this fixes the issue. in the bios it still detects my HD, cpu, and ram so i belive it is a corrupt sector or what not.

-->if i get a new hard drive, is there anyway to make my current hard drive into like a usb flash drive and hook it up to transfer my files from it to my new one? make it show like an f or h drive like a usb key?

I got a card this weekend: IF you were a dog and this old, you'd be dead!

7 is super old in the computer world man. i say sell it and buy a laptop from bestbuy for 400-500 bucks with windows 7. best investment you will ever make for the next 3 years IMO. Don't bother going with those massive screen, 14" screen laptop is the best size.

if you still want to deal with your old pc, then reinstall windows is the fastest/easiest method to fix the problem.

it took my all day but i cleaned out the inside of my computer. it was so dusty in there wow, even found some bugs .

i checked all the wirings and removed them and insert them back in followed by removing the mobo battery and disconnecting the power supply for 5 hours.

came back turned it on and voila it is working again. i backed up everything to an external hard drive should anything really happens again.

right now the only games i play are wow, cs, and sc2 and my comp runs them fine. im mostly into console gaming nowdays as they improved alot from the past.

i will need a new pc eventually, likely when a game i really want to play comes out, nothing as of yet.

as technology gets better, parts only get cheaper which i am excited about, thanks guys for the help .
