BMW selling ever more armored cars due to ongoing drug wars
This story comes from the guys at Autoblog. Its being reported that because of the Mexican drug war, which has involved many news making kidnappings and assasinations have led many to seek an extra layer of automotive protection. Reportedly, armored car sales are up 20% in 2010! BMW has always been in a prime position in the armored car market and markets some nicely bulletproofed up X5s, 5 and 7-Series to do the job. Yeah, both BMW and Mercedes sell quite a bit of armored cars in Mexico and Colombia, this has been going on for years, even before the drug wars. In Mexico city you'll see most BMWs and Mercedes with a Dodge Stratus or similar car following behind full of bodyguards. I once saw an armored 993 TT, pretty cool car but I thought an armored sports car was kind of pointless.

I remember going to AMG in Affalterbach - they also build the Panzer'd models there. For the really top end stuff for heads of states and all... say a G-wagon or S-class... you can not even buy their cars! They are all leased! And when the car needs servicing... they trade you out into a new-er car. They don't want anyone taking their cars apart to see where any weaknesses are or how the car are put together! very interesting.
BTW... Audi, BMW and MB all make Panzer'd cars. |

Here are two pics I took at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show (IAA). I could have sworn I had more pics... but these two are the only ones I could find on my HD. I saw a seven and a five series also in the Protection program.
X5 protection model... Dackel |

The tires most likely have a Kevlar side wall and the fuel pump will be very hard to hit. I can imagine how heavy p/sluggish the x5 will be

Well i am sure if you have the money and want the extra protection you could get it. Any private business over that does bait of exportation to Mexico or any other place should have one of these.
