Should I go M?
For a while now I have been debating whether or not I should sell my e90 lci (335) and purchase an e46 m3. Right now I can get the m3 for around 20K and then I would put stage 2 HPF for another 20K. The car will be a monster producing over 600 whp and thats only stage 2.
Anyway, do you guys think I should go with this? Or will it be a stupid move that I will never be able to recover from? - from a financial standpoint HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Last edited by E92TTKING; 03-10-2012 at 11:22 PM.. |

Get the M3, leave it NA and enjoy it.

Buying a car that is still depreciating, then dumping 100% of its value into modifications is surely a stupid financial decision from which you will never recover.
On the other hand if I had any financial sense at all I would have stuck with my E90 as well. Anything with an S54 in it gets my vote, you can always enjoy the car stock (relatively) before making your decision on the modifications. |

Although I would usually agree with this. To think to trade in my newer non M three series for an older M3 wouldn't make any sense just for the fact that your trading in a newer car for an older model. Power wise you have a 335i you can dump your money into it and you can make it faster than even the new M3. I say if you come up with an older M as a secondary car then you have my

Go M and skip the HPF, chances are you won't keep the car forever and thus you won't be able to make back nearly the amount you spend on the kit.

I don't get the obsession with power. Where will you use it? 600 HP? how reliable will the car be with all these mods?
Just dont' get it; modding it in this manner will destroy the responsiveness of the M powertain. Boosted cars are always laggy and disconnected. If you want straight line speed there are other ways. Yet in the USA, you still will never be able to get it up to speed. |

it may be a loss price wise, however the kit is very reliable and comes with warranty. I dont see how you destroy the responsiveness, as you are only improving it.
Maybe this is not the right car for this? what do you recommend? I believe hpf is reputable and that this car would last if maintained properly. I think that the e46 is better than the e90 in that it is more tuner friendly similar to the 335 Thanks for responding ! Take Care |

Daily driver? Weekend car? Financially speaking, modding a car is going to be a loss in every regard, you will never get back what you pay. I can't imagine driving a 600 hp car everyday, but I've never driven a HPF M3, so I could be wrong. It sure seems like it would be fun though.

I'm sure you'll be happy driving the HPF kit.
I would however weigh the benefit (fun/acceleration) against the frequency (how often you will make use of it). Your acceleration is what will give you that butt dyno feeling that you're [most likely] after. For 'legal speeds', you'll be mostly traction limited, so you won't get that much more acceleration than with a more run-of-the-mill RWD car (like a vanilla M3). You could mitigate your lack of traction by driving around on DRs all the time, and hoping the asphalt isn't greasy at your red light (lol). At higher speeds, where traction isn't that much of an issue, you can definitely get a lot out of the kit. However, at this point, you will be way over any speed limit. So, unless you're willing to risk your license, you won't get to make use of the HPF kit on a daily driver basis. How often are you willing to risk your license? Now, if you had AWD... then I'd say you got nothing to worry about. Then you could use every bit of power all the time, with no caveats about hooking up or breaking traction. You could drive around like a bunny rabbit. -scheherazade |

I would get an E46 M3 and enjoy it NA for a while. When you get bored, then go for forced induction.
The S54 is capable of 1000hp with forced induction. I don't think anyone has gotten an S65 or N54 to that level, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong... The S54 is a legendary engine...
