I was wondering what you guys thing is a better option. Either one I get would be fairly high mileage probable 80,000 +. Has anyone ever had the tiptronic S4 because I dont know how to drive a manual yet, and was wondering how much it slows the car down. And if i were to get a GTI i would get it with the DSG transmission. I know this is not an audi/VW forum but I though you guys would know a thing or two.

B5 S4's are fast and fun, but the 2.7TT is an absolute toilet of an engine. This information comes straight from a friend who is a master audi tech. Typically the turbos clog up with oil and fail. I'd really stay away from it unless you have money to burn. Why not check out a 2004 R32? That was my last car and if I could have kept it as a weekend car, I would have. I owned it for 7 years and 92,000 trouble free miles.
MKV GTI's are great too. The VW DSG is a fantastic transmission! Just make sure to get one that hasn't been flogged on too bad, same goes for the R32.

Well if I chip a MK5 GTI to stage 1 wouldnt it be running about as fast as a 2004 R32?

I feel like a stock GTI would beat out a stock R32 anyway. There's a lot of drive train loss on the R because it's AWD. I had mine on a dyno (heartbreaker reads low) with a chip, and exhaust and I was putting down about 189hp to the wheels. After a cam and reflash I got 215hp or something.

A chipped GTI is real fast, but it will never be nearly as nice overall as an R32. Not to mention the sound, OMG! Sometimes I would listen to the car instead of the radio. The interior is much better in the R as well, especially the seats.

Remember this too, there were only 5000 R32's brought into the US, so exclusivity is also a factor. GTI's are a dime a dozen, especially MKV's.

Last point, the MKIV R32 is manual only. You'd have to get a MKV if you want DSG. believe it or not you'll probably find a MKV cheaper because everyone wants manual. I sold my MKIV for $16000 with 92,xxx miles on it. It did have some nice mods and was in showroom condition.

So I see you're thinking about the MKV now? I had a MKV and absolutely loved it. Dropped it, put BBS wheels on it and an APR tune and DONE! Don't get an R32, too heavy and really no performance inscrease. My stock MKV could hang with my buddies MK4 R32 all day. When I got my MKV tuned there was no contest. I think you'll be very happy with the GTI, really fun little cars, and quite good looking too. I still kind of miss it......the MKVI is just sexy as sh*t

The S4 is fun to drive, when you have it in your garage. Chances are its gonna be in then shop.

I had a 2000 S4 with 64,000 to 80,000 miles. Car was in shop every other month or so. I figured out why the car had so many low miles, because the original owner never had a chance to drive it.

that should settle your ? on accelaration on a chipped mk5 gti vs a mk5 r32. A chipped gti is SEVEN seconds faster then an r32 in 0-130. i currently have a mkv gti, an 09 stage 1 with 45k miles. not one problem, has been a GREAT car. i average about 32 mpg and average 38 mpg if im in 6th gear cruising at 39mph. it handles like it's on rails aswell, i can't say enough about this great car!

B5 S4 hands down....It will be more expensive to fix and may be in the shop more often but neither the GTI or the R32 someone mentioned come close to the speed/fun.

DSG is on an other level vs the terrible tiptronic. Also the B5 S4 is not that reliable be ready to sink a lot of money into it. It will also be older go with the GTI

R32 will not be faster than a chipped GTI, but the VR6 exhaust note is one of the best. It's one of those cars you can enjoy driving without racing someone.


Budget at least $2k for maintenance/repairs for a German car with 80k miles.

Had both a MKV modded GTI and a MKV R32 and both were pretty reliable. GTI had a K04 so it was faster than the R32 but had problems putting the power down. R32 is such a balanced automobile that's also fun to drive. Get one of those and enjoy it!
