So all of this work to organize the lineup into even numbers - coupes and odd numbers - sedans, was for nothing?

My guess. As all the 2 and 4 door cojupe and sedan series seem to be getting larger, this is the new M1 Series launch.

A new Z3 deserves a unique front and rear end, not just a chopped 235i (I do like the looks though).

This could just be the beginning.

That's what Scott has hinted. Z3 would be the roadster, and Z4 would be its coupe equivalent (or is it vice versa?)

Same with the Z1:Z2 and Z5:Z6.

For more clues let us say that Winter is coming...
But this prototype also shows possibilities for the M2.
AWD Z3?

The chopped 235 bodywork is just to disguise it as a test mule.

The engineering schematics for the Carbon intensive architecture is impressive. You are going to see so much for so little with the combined force of BMW and Toyota using all their resources available.

BMW wants to re-invent its Z series sports cars and make them as cutting edge and influential as the BMWi models by visual appearance and state of the art engineering to highlight a new BMW philosophy for sports cars.

Vision ConnectedDrive and 328 Homage concepts are the template for the visuals. Plans also include a slightly massaged three cylinder entirely unique and exclusive in the Z3 Mille Miglia mimicking the classic 328 to provide excellent dynamics using lightweight materials."
Auto Motor & Sport claims the test mule is what will eventually become the Z2.

They say it's based on the Mini chassis with transverse engine and FWD. Hence the shortened wheelbase.

Well, if the odd numbers are fixed hardtops and the even numbers are cloth/metal verts then I could see it making a bit more sense.

Otherwise they're just upended a lot of time, money and PR from the past decade.

It does look so much better the 2 series. It has to be front wheel drive due to the extra front end and having the short tail it will be a roadster.
