I do give a couple of dollars to the Uber driver assuming the car was clean, they weren't burning incense etc.

As for the Uber fee here in N.O., that's news to me but I never take Uber from the airport. Taking a regular cab to downtown will easily be $50 plus a tip. Ultimately the cab companies here are a very vocal bunch and much like a union and they were strongly opposed to allowing Uber. I suppose this was a concession to the cab drivers/companies...

I have never had an instance where I felt I did not have to tip. It can be tough to determine who made the mistake... the kitchen or the wait staff? I tip delivery drivers about the same if a bit less. I have heard of people not tipping drivers because they took forever, but most of the time I would imagine that is the kitchen/management's fault.

This is true. In other countries the employer is responsible for the salary for their employees and not the customer. True. The question is, once you DO know, how do you use that information? That part is on you. How the companies behave is on them. Someone shouldn't nearly drown, but if you see that, do you choose to save them anyway?

I am certain that servers everywhere (other than the one Twitter person in the article) sincerely appreciate your altruism. I am sure your gift to humanity will not go unnoticed.

I see your point. Do you believe that it is the responsibility of each customer to worry about each person's wage when ever they go to a restaurant,board a bus,board a plane,get a haircut,get their car fixed,get a massage,get a facial,etc...?

I am not anti-tipping as people who wish to tip should tip and should be free to tip but that should not mean that is should be mandatory and that the customers of any or every business establishment should be paying the difference of the underpaid employee by their employer.

As someone who earns a measly wage, I do not expect people to tip me because I chose a profession that gets paid poorly. Some jobs come with stress. some jobs come with crappy pay. At the end of the day, if you aren't happy with the wages, supplement your income or find a new job. I choose to just ignore that I don't get paid well and hang out on car forums.

Not everyone can have their dream job, get paid the big bucks, own the McMansion with the white picket fence, 2.3 kids, and a have a well behaved dog who catches the paper boy's morning news each day.

No I don't. But the expectation of tipping comes from the knowledge that they are laid accordingly. Many people want more of a "pay for performance" environment in the world. Personal responsibility and all that. This is that. Part of a server's pay is solely based on performance. You pay less for your meal (really, you do - if they had to triple or quadruple every servers' wage, you'd have to pay more) and the server's pay is determined by performance. That, and people's general attitude about tipping.

answer me this one

I went to a local nandos.

Had to order at the counter, then had to pay in advance and had a tip option.
So they bring your food to you, but you go up and get utensils, sauces etc,

WTF

I tipped just to make sure no one spat in my food, but I CERTAINLY wont go back to that hobo joint

Remember that customers could be from out of state or even out of country. Each customer can not be expected to know whether or not the the business establishment that they entered pays their employees the minimum wage, a wage under minimum wage or a wage over minimum wage.

What do I think it SHOULD be? Or what do I know that it IS? In a hypothetical perfect world, all the service would be great and tipping would be obsolete. After my dessert of baked rainbows on a warm cloud and a warm mug of essence of unicorn, I would leave in my flying car and the server would be paid accordingly. In the world I live in, I know it is up to me and I deal with it.

I just double the tax in CA. About 17%. Honestly, I rarely get bad service. Maybe I'm just lucky or too understanding.
