The parades and media attention were to call attention to the violence and discrimination that gays faces for decades. If it wasn't for all that gays would still be treated like second class citizens.

You do see straight parades and straight people going around telling everyone they are. You just don't notice it because your straight.

not the express purpose but it's certainly a component. I'm sure if I looked I could find some dumb parade that does. There is a parade for everything it seems

This is one of those situations where you won't get an honest answer... bcuz the next question should be why is there a black history month as opposed to all of us just celebrating the fact that we are all Americans... The answer is, anyone that is not of the majority can celebrate whatever they want without being offensive, however if the majority would try to celebrate themselves... you have offensiveness and political incorrectness... that's simply how it is... I think that exists. Look at Veterans Day parades. They are overwhelmingly white and male. you see Easter parades, Christmas parades etc. I think celebrating the majority is fairly well represented. So much so that even the majority brakes off in to sub sets. You have Irish parades and such

The reason the "lifestyle" has a parade is because it's the reason gays were singled out. People didn't get put in jail for being white and straight. They didn't lose their jobs. They weren't killed. They didn't have certain benefits. It's to bring awareness. Although now it's more just a party than anything else. Times have changed dramatically
