The car has 252k miles, pretty good tbh. Sounds like he got exactly what someone should expect when you buy “the cheapest X in the country” and it has over 200k miles.

Pains me greatly to agree with you. Some how this looks like reality TV to me. This guy knew this was a issue when he bought the Tesla. Considering there is the promise of a future video, I'd say he had a plan from the beginning.

I will point out that $21,700.00 buys a hell of a engine rebuild on a ICE car.

I think that's just a default to his mistake of getting one of those, secondhand main EV batteries don't come refurbished.

About £7k would do it over here for a dead M V8, I pointed a guy already on here to an engine rebuild factor but think he got cold feet.

The Tesla price is probably for a brand new battery pack. The existing one could be reconditioned for far less.
It is likely that just one or two cells (out of around 7000) has gone bad which would disable the complete module.
Its a easy enough repair for a specialist. I suspect this is the reason the car was purchased so a YT video can be made documenting the repair.
