I'm sure others had a party line in their house. We shared our phone line with 4 neighbors. Was always weird to pick up the phone and hear someone else on the lie already. And we had a phone number to call for time and temperature. Set all our clocks and watches via that phone number.

You old when you remember tuition at the largest state University was $229/quarter. You could easily pay for it with a summer job.

just remembered it was $229 for the '79-'80 school year. It was probably the same the following couple of years. Around '82 or 83 it went up to $330, should have heard the screaming about the near 50% increase.

Reminds me of an old geek joke.

Q: Why are computers better than women?
A: There's still a few computers that'll accept a 3-1/2" floppy.

My dad's an electrical engineer and my mom's an anesthesiologist so I know being smart isn't an issue but I've also never seen either of them fix anything themselves, it generally ends up at my hands or a technician's if I'm not around. A few months back my dad ran into some issues with his laptop and I asked that friend to go to my place and help him out.

Keep in mind he went to college in the 80s when PCs were becoming a thing yet can't "fix" his own computer. But he can talk your ears off about blood cell separation and a bunch of other extremely cool medical stuff

Hell just the other day I finally wired a start/stop button from a Renault Megane to open my computer with the help of that good friend. Ordering a BMW one shortly and designing a 3D printed desk thing for it, too. Our 3rd friend in that group goes to Tufts, graduating in May with a dual degree in CS and Econ. I've built both of his desktops because he just doesn't know how to and has no interest in learning it. But just like that I have no interest in learning how to code
I totally get what you're saying. Not everyone wants to putz and tinker and explore.

The part that's discouraging is the indoctrinated helplessness. The notion that unless and until one of the "annointed class" tells them that they can do something, and teaches them exactly how they'd like it done, they're convinced that they can't do it. And shouldn't even try. Combine the voluntary helplessness with scientific and mathematical illiteracy and the eradication of independent critical thinking, and you've got someone who's obedient and effective at a prescribed set of tasks but very easily duped into believing and doing things that serve someone else's ideologies and schemes. And guaranteed not to do anything that threatens the status quo or peer behind the curtain. I loathe that with every cell of my being.

Okay, who remembers Iomega Zip and Jaz drives?

And how 'bout DAT audio tape systems? The band I was in in the '90s had a DAT deck.

I can still hear the howl of the Goodyear Polyglass tires on my dad's Torino GT, when we used to rip around on the deserted roads in the foothills of Montana.

Yeah UW tuition was under 500 per quarter in the 90s I believe. Dont have to be that old to remember not getting screwed over by college.

The good old days.

My tuition was about 285/per semester. The Navy covered all tuition, books and fees. The rest of my scholarships were cash payments so I had 4 or 5 thousand left over each semester.

My daughter's tuition, in contrast, was $9K including room but no board per semester for undergrad and is about $12-14 or so for law school.

How the times have changed...

My university tuition was free, but that's a benefit of living in a "socialist" country like New Zealand.

I say "socialist" tongue-in-cheek because it's not, but any time someone like Bernie Sanders suggests "free ..... for all", people scream "socialism".

I live in a 55 plus golf community. Other day we were all gathered round admiring a golf cart with a lithium battery. Yeah, you know you are old when that sparks your day.

Firestone 500's were their first attempt at a radial tire, and they were already late to the radial tire party when they launched those disasters.....
