As we are on xo, I got this thing when transiting through HKG earlier this year. Sales lady told me this is HKG exclusive at the time, not sure about now.

I got it for around $400 with some promo discounts. You can taste it is another level above xo.

I have 4 experiences with L13 and each of them is from different year.

Picture above is from late 80s (forgot the exact year) - tastiest of the 4.

Had one from 1996, 1999, and 2005. These were bottled years if I remember correctly. Each of them tastes differently, but all of them have the same baseline L13 taste profile.

The way they have been making L13 the last 10-15 years is much different than before and that's why you can find a bottle at Costco everyday for $3k. Also the crystal they use is no longer the same grade.

Would call this a bucket list item if you are somewhat into cognac.

Absolutely..Great stuff. Its insane good for the price.

I will net a headache for wine, beer and whiskey/burbon. But a few years ago at my B.I.N in the course of say 10 yours I had 8+oz and never had a headache. Many people don not get a headache on scotch.

When I was 21 I had a couple ounces short of a quart of wild turkey. Drank it with cranberry juice in 2 hours.I weighed 125 pounds. Did not pass out. The next morning I was fine. I lost my memory though that afternoon. Doc said I had a lost weekend.

I don't deserve to be alive today. Never had cranberry and whiskey again.

It's a bit early in the evening to be discussing sobriety. I might dig deep into my Scotch a little later, I'm thinking some 21 year old Glenlivet.

Anything above Paradis level is great - when you went through college having VSOP or even XO and you made that face when sipping it, you try this and realize how smooth it can and should be. Sucks you have to pay for the quality of the bottle though.

Yup and I cannot even take VSOP in any forms anymore. In fact, I don't even enjoy XO unless they are made by Martell (favorite brand of XO), Remy, or Otard. Something about Martell XO that I enjoy more than all other brands.

so far I have used the "master of mixers" mix and the cocktail crate brands, the latter being pricey but good

Yeah. Don’t use anything called, referred to or labeled as “mixer(s)”.

2 oz Bourbon
3⁄4 oz Fresh lemon juice
1⁄2 oz Simple syrup
1⁄2 oz Egg white

Take the time to squeeze some lemons. Fresh juice is miles better than anything pre-packaged. If your recipe doesn't have egg white in it, get the fuck out.

Also, doing a reverse dry shake is completely worth the time and effort for the mouthfeel and presentation it brings to the cocktail.

Cheers!

"Far better" sub-$30 bourbons?

Hmmmmm..... Unless you're talking about local/regional stuff, nothing jumps immediately to mind.

Well, when i say "for the price" I mean in the same general range, so anything close counts to me. I'd rather spend an extra $5 for a much better bourbon, for example.

Prices may vary by region, obviously; but here are a few in my area:

Buffalo Trace: ~$20 (I get it for $18.99 on mil bases, but usually under $30 anyway)
Four Roses: ~$20
Larceny: ~$30
Eagle Rare: ~$30
Russell's Reserve 10 year: ~$30
Elijah Craig Small Batch: ~$30
Four Roses Small Batch ~$35
Barton's 1792: ~$35
Henry McKenna 10 year Bottled in Bond: ~$35
Jefferson's Very Small Batch: ~$40

Taste-buds also vary, but I would personally rate every one of the above as a better bourbon than Maker's.
