I miss my bikes sometimes...Nice Seal Kevin, what a great time of year to be in the islands. Hickam was usually our first stop out of Travis. I have left plenty of brain cells on that island

So I took a bunch of pics using the Tamron with my 5D3. Image quality is good, not stellar, and I definitely wouldn't trade my 400 prime for it, it frustrated me several times with a wishy washy auto focus. So my original thinking stands. For airshows or larger slower wildlife (like the zoo), the extra reach will be nice. It is definitely not a BIF lens.

Well, this hawk image is stellar. For the price, you have to put up with some OOF shots. To raise the keeper rate at this focal length you'll have to spend many thousands more.

Pretty cool shot, Ed. Nice and sharp. How far away were you? Any crop to that?

I was under the tree shooting up through my sunroof. That shot was a 1600x1280 crop out of an image similar to this one:

It seems to have good contrast, which is something I like.

I'm impressed with Ed's sunroof. You score lots of nice shots through it. :-)

Friends at the Frost bar for drinks and lunch by dcstep, on Flickr

I'm getting better and better at this, getting waitstaff to take a good picture of my party. (I'm at the far end in black T). I used to set the ISO and hand the camera to the waiter/waitress, show them the shutter and pray. This time I thought about the shot, including direction of light, arrangement of people and zoom range. So for this shot, I set the ISO, I set the aperture at f/10 for decent DOF, I set the zoom range, showed the waitress the shutter and showed her how to hold the camera. I told her where to stand and asked to squat a little (she had on very tight pants, so that's what got us all laughing). Anyway, it worked very well, I think.

When I showed the image to my friends, via Flickr app on my iPhone, everyone wanted a copy.

Oh, I did preview the shot before the waitress left us and would have asked for another try if it'd been poorly done.

Dave

Another shot from the Tamron. Interest in this lens is high. My Flickr count went through the roof today.

I'm not seeing much to complain about, at least in good light.

Yes, the more I look at the files, the happier I am with it so far. The auto focus might just be my own technique that may need tweaking, as well as some camera settings. I am going to take it elk hunting next weekend and see how that goes.

The interest in the Tammy remains strong! I had almost 22, 000 hits on my Flickr today

In addition to the Tamron on the 5D3, I had along my trusty 1DIV along with the 400 5.6L mounted with the 1.4TC. It focused much easier on trickier situations such as this white-faced Ibis flying out of the sun:
