A plant being brand new means its employees are keenly aware of the high expectations and visibility to their work. If there's any difference in quality as a function of time, I'd worry least about the first rounds of productions out of a new plant.

1. The real alternatives and competitors are other - relatively low cost locations - in Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. Not the very successful, recently expanded, US operation in NC.
2. Mexican automotive labour is very qualified, we have had a booming auto industry for the last 15 years or so.
3. US suppliers are much more likely to be integrated into this plant's value chain than they would be if the plant was built outside North America.
4. Creating well paid jobs in Mexico reduces illegal immigration to the US in the long term.
5. A wealthier neighbour to the south helps the US in many ways. We can better police ourselves and buy more US made products. We are also politically stable and a partner instead of trouble.

It is also good news for BMW enthusiasts because the cars will be exactly the same. They will still be built and designed in Germany, to German standards and philosophy. And Mexican labour is as qualified as any other in the world. Harder working than most, even.

I am pretty sure BMW's won't get any cheaper because of this - just as a 3 series built today in South Africa isn't any cheaper than one built in Munich. But this enables BMW to make money in an ever tougher competitive environment with their peers and thus, STAY INDEPENDENT.

It's all about finances.

By building in Mexico, they cannot only export to America without any tariffs, they can also export to the EU without tariffs as well! That may change with the US and EU negotiating presently on a 'free-trade" agreement. The German's are scared to death they will be forced to consume "chlorinated chicken" from the USA.

Mexico is a very strategic location for all automakers, as Audi is joining BMW, Mercedes/Nissan, as well as the long established VW to produce there.

+1000 "paisano" I couldn't agree more with you. I work in the Auto industry and I've been to several plants in Mexico, USA (BMW's Spartanburg plant included), Canada and Asia. And I can tell that not only the Mexican labour is one of the best, but also the whole quality and result-oriented philosophy that these plants live to.

A HUGE amount of the BMW construction is carried out by robots. Yes, there is still a fair amount of hand's on work, but given that robots don't need coffee or pee breaks or to eat, they help significantly to moderate the overall cost of running a modern car factory. In addition to that, the robotic and laser verification jigs help ensure the quality is maintained.

By the way, if the plant capacity estimates are true, this BMW investment will dwarf the similar one in Brazil that was announced a year ago. The Brazil's plant capacity is 30,000 cars a year:

According to this preliminary news, this Mexico plant would build up to 200,000 cars a year. My guess is the Brazilian production is mostly for local and Mercosur consumption, while our plant would export to developed markets.

There is a reason Brazil had to chicken out and impose import limits on Mexican cars.

At least on this, it seems the final score will be Mexico 1 - Brazil 0.

Agreed. life is too short to waste any energy being offended. We would all be so much better off if we spent more time laughing (at ourselves and others) and didn't take the inconsequential things so seriously.

Rumor has it that the next generation 3 series, X1, Mini Countryman, and FWD 1 series are going to be built there for the US and Latin American market. My bet is most likely cars on the FWD platform as that would make more sense since they are doing the modular platforms for the GXX generation cars.

I second this notion... there was a study not long ago about the VW Puebla plant having better quality even than the German ones...
