A plant being brand new means its employees are keenly aware of the high expectations and visibility to their work. If there's any difference in quality as a function of time, I'd worry least about the first rounds of productions out of a new plant. |

That doesn't mean we can't still have a little fun with stereotypical humor ![]() There were certainly plenty of jokes to be made about Spartanburg SC and the wisdom of entrusting Bubba with building the Ultimate Driving Machine (I was raised there and proud of my redneck roots but still willing to laugh at it) ![]() In that spirt: Where do I sign up for the first Mexican Delivery? Will there be an added discount for safely transporting an illegal immigrant across the border. Planning the driving route will also take great care. You think the Italians are hazardous. You aint seen nothing yet. ![]() |

It's all about finances.
By building in Mexico, they cannot only export to America without any tariffs, they can also export to the EU without tariffs as well! That may change with the US and EU negotiating presently on a 'free-trade" agreement. The German's are scared to death they will be forced to consume "chlorinated chicken" from the USA. Mexico is a very strategic location for all automakers, as Audi is joining BMW, Mercedes/Nissan, as well as the long established VW to produce there. |

In case you don't know Mexican Manufacturing have the best quality, just ask VW, Ford, GM, Chrysler, etc. which plants have the best quality.

A HUGE amount of the BMW construction is carried out by robots. Yes, there is still a fair amount of hand's on work, but given that robots don't need coffee or pee breaks or to eat, they help significantly to moderate the overall cost of running a modern car factory. In addition to that, the robotic and laser verification jigs help ensure the quality is maintained.

Sometimes we can get offended by all sort of stupid things, like the bit Top Gear did about the mexican Mastretta car a couple of years ago. Top Gear does that all the time to every nationality, even towards the British themselves. Having said that, you'd be surprised about how much fun we can have driving a BMW down here. I get bored to death driving in the US. A Mexican delivery in the proper place wouldn't be bad at all.

By the way, if the plant capacity estimates are true, this BMW investment will dwarf the similar one in Brazil that was announced a year ago. The Brazil's plant capacity is 30,000 cars a year:
https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/usa/p...tem=node__5247 According to this preliminary news, this Mexico plant would build up to 200,000 cars a year. My guess is the Brazilian production is mostly for local and Mercosur consumption, while our plant would export to developed markets. There is a reason Brazil had to chicken out and impose import limits on Mexican cars. At least on this, it seems the final score will be Mexico 1 - Brazil 0. Some compensation for last Sunday's Robbery. ![]()

Rumor has it that the next generation 3 series, X1, Mini Countryman, and FWD 1 series are going to be built there for the US and Latin American market. My bet is most likely cars on the FWD platform as that would make more sense since they are doing the modular platforms for the GXX generation cars.

This sounds like great news. This should provide more jobs down south and improve their economy.
I wonder if I can take delivery, maybe of the new M2 their. Drive it around and then have them ship it by train or whatever like in Germany to Cali with a few kilos down from Culiacán Sinaloa ![]() |
