Peaceful music is what I use. Some albums of classic trance with smooth beats, close your eyes, and drift away. Like Whostheboss said, certain sounds waves trigger the mind to dissentiate from outside things clouding your mind, almost like internal anxiety, which prevents many people from reaching REM.
Have you ever wondered why massage places play harmonious music? It puts the mind in a completely different state, and puts your mind at peace. There is no confliction. I have this kind of music playing before I go to bed, unless I'm boozed up, then I don't care enough. I'd try that before reverting to pills and booze. There is an underlying factor that is preventing you from entering REM. |

I suggest to listen to the sound of sizzling bacon, which soothes the soul. You will fall asleep and dream of that amazing bacon breakfast. REM sleep generally increases 10-fold when the content of the dream has a bacon factor of 3.2 or greater. I am not a doctor, but I did make some smoked bacon for lunch yesterday.

I have diagnosed issues with anxiety. Doesn't screw with my daily life, just my going to sleep and (sometimes) going back to sleep if I wake up. I am on low-dose Lorazepam on an as-needed basis. It works really well for me and there's no hangover from it. The down side is regular use can cause the body to develop tolerance and make it less effective or render it ineffective unless the dosage is continually increased. I don't take it very often, so it works very well for me. It just calms me and allows my already tired self go to sleep naturally.

We eat late at our house, usually between 9:30pm and 10pm. Usually in bed around midnight and wake up around 7:30am. For me, a good pillow is crucial. Been sleeping like a baby recently. Fresh air for me is key: an open window does the trick.

Melatonin (but that shit gives you weird dreams... Like the other night I dreamt I was screwing a vampire chick) and/or something mellow like smooth jazz playing gently in the background.

Also I find sometimes having the TV on with low volume helps me fall asleep (though unless I have it on timer it can wake me up once asleep). I think mainly because sometimes it's my own thoughts in my head that wont let me sleep. Like a none stop conversation that I cannot shut up. I think the sound of the TV distracts my mind from itself.

I usually have hard time falling asleep on a normal schedule.
I was usually way early or late often to work in my early 20s. Now, I have found a way! I just wake up 30minutes early. It usually works, but I would do 5 day increment of increasing 30 minutes early wake up.

Oh and forgot to mention... Sleeping completely in the dark also boosts your natural sleep hormone levels. Get blackout curtains and turn off all lights. If the darkness bothers you, just get a flashlight app for your phone and set the timer to about 5 minutes, or shut your eyes but have your thumb on the button that turns it off.
