Someone beat me to it but the reality is that cars have gotten much heavier. An X3 also runs on glorified car tires, not beefy suv tires, so there is simply less meat to begin with. Combine that with the stiffer sidewall of the RFTs and you have a recipe for increased rubber consumption.
On my 135i, the lightest of the BMW coupes, my stock summer tires were completely bald at turn-in and I swapped wheels/tires each winter. They probably had 15k on them. I was actually pretty impressed. I only mention this for laughs but my Lotus Exige, which weighed 1,980 lbs, went through a set of Yokohama Advan A048s in less than 6k.

I would be celebrating managing to go 27,000 miles on a single set of tyres. I mean... wow!

@ OP you lucked out or drive slow.
My back RFTs were bald at 14,000 miles. I swapped them to non RFT, better grip and proper handling with Michelin PSS , I have had two new sets and just recently tried the Continental DW... Get rid of your RFT and drive your car with some spirited driving from time to time. |

Slight thread hijack but perhaps folks can educate me. On our X1 with 8k miles with Pirelli Cinturato P7 All-Season run flat tires the front are at 7/32 and the rears at 6/32. They suck and I see replacing them well before we get 20k miles on them. C'est la vie.
Pirelli says "Run Flat tires have the same mileage warranty as the standard tire line they are part of, up to a maximum of 30,000 miles." So I would think there would be some coverage for their poor life. However, Pirelli says "This warranty is only valid to the original consumer purchaser, and do not apply to any tires which are mounted as Original Equipment on a new vehicle." Why would a tire mfg not warranty OEM tires? I find that odd. My local BMW dealer said they might do something if the tire life ends prematurely. Selling me another set is not in the cards. I'll get some non run flats and not ones from Pirelli. Last edited by BeEmVe; 12-27-2014 at 07:46 PM.. |

If you leased it, it must be returned at lease end with (I believe) a minimum of 5mm remaining and a similar rated, run-flat tire to OEM...If you purchased it? Have at it and swap out the run-flats for whatever your heart desires..

It was purchased so no worries there. Hmm, I wonder if there is secondary market for RF tires with just enough thread to satisfy a lease return. Anybody need a set of 225/45-18

me2 ... 12K on rears max if I'm lucky 275/35 r18 PS2, PSS of Bstones, all non-rft, doesn't matter that much.
I always buy 6 tires as I know I will need to replace a set of rears when my fronts are around ~ 50%. |

I will be lucky if i make it 15k on my tires. No burnouts just fun driving.
Cant compare with SUV tires... different animal.

I get 6-9K on PSS. Who gets 27K out of tires? Do you turn?

Plenty of tires that will roll 50-70k, just not RFTs. OEM tires (regardless of vehicle brand) won't last as long as tires you can buy elsewhere.
I haven't done it on these two BMWs yet, but usually I can buy a great set with great tread life and sell my "new OEM" on CL and come out fine. I always upgrade my truck tires, so with 200-500 miles on the "new" tires, I pull em off and can get $700 or so for the set, then buy a set of 70k tires for another $300-400 more. These staggered sets of Pilots or Michelins run about the same. hard to sell OEM tires with no tread left. |

But I know there are plenty of 45, 50, 60 and 70k tires out there - Now why do you say oem won't last as long as tires you can buy elsewhere? Thats exactly what all the tire retailers have been telling me and I've been telling them that just aint true.

Tires with that sort of wear are simply not going to handle, brake or ride as well as quality tires that don't last that long. It's a compromise. If you want tires that last a long time, you'll have to give up some safety of shorter stopping distances and handling capabilities.
I run Michelin Pilot A/S 3's on my daily and they are not nearly as capable as my PSS's, but they last twice as long and are quieter. Of course it helps that my daily is 2,600 pounds too. |
