So call me cheap or whatever... but here's what I've done for the past 5 years, and its been fantastic every time.

Go to a grocery store. Seriously. Get them yourself and deliver them yourself. To the girl, it means much more when you pick out the flowers yourself and give them to her directly than having some gay dude put an arrangement together and some weird guy in a van delivering them.

The quality of flowers at grocery stores (Here in TN, like Kroger or Publix.. even Wal-Mart) is fantastic. You can buy them young or fully mature, depending on how long you want them to last. I've gone the florist route, and I usually just spend $100 on roses that are massive for a day or two, then wilt. I'd much rather pay <$50 for flowers that are going to last almost two weeks. Just a suggestion for you guys who haven't tried it out yet.

I bought a dozen roses from the Cool Springs Publix on the way home from work, $34 with tax.

Find a good local florist, if you need dependability.

Alpine - tip on a great local florist, if you need something extra special:
Linda Raintree @ Raintree Flowers, 777-RAIN
Not cheap. She does a lot of weddings and such. She did a bouquet for my wife, delivered to her office, few years back. Many people where I work use her regularly.

think about this...

1-800 flowers is taking a cut of the sale. Any decent florist will be at capacity on valentines day, so they don't need to accept the cut rates that then national middle man demands. So, the florists signing up for this, and have last minute capacity on valentines day, are likely crappy florists.

Well, the whole reason for a company like 1-800 is if you are not located where you want the flowers delivered...
