I only use primes when shooting cars, but he said the big thing for him is budget. So i'm sure he'd prefer versatility until he hones his skills.

This is a lens I always recommend no matter if you are starting out or are a seasoned veteran. It's image quality is very high, you can get excellent Bokeh (background/foreground blur) due to its fast Aperture shot all the way open and it's the best value of any lens Nikon/Canon sells. You can take portraits, shoot cars etc. it's also one of the lightest lenses you can find for these DSLr cameras.
It's a bit long for most landscape shots if you are into landscape. But it's a good walk around lens also. The newest version are the 50 1.8G and the 50 1.4G Nikon lenses. They offer the best image quality and focus quicker than previous models. I recently sold my 50 1.8G and will pick up a 50 1.4G in the near future. Just finiishing up a car project first. If you want to see examples go to Flickr and look at the specific group for the particular lens you are interested in. You will see thousands of real world images by regular folks taken with that lens. |

^^^ Just to add to the above post. If you are shooing on a crop sensor, you may want the 35mm 1.8.

I finally got the camera a couple days ago, so far I really like it. Definitely need to learn more, baby steps. Tomorrow i will be going to a nice car show so I had a quick question. When waking around at shows and shooting, do you us auto focus or manual? And here are a couple pictures I've taken so far. Messed around with the editing of the sti rear only, rest are left alone. Let me know what you think and what I can improve on!
