My first car was a 2005.5 B7 A4 2.0T. I treated that car like gold until it got traded in for a 2011 GTI, which got me through medical school. I remember reading car and driver since I was in my early teens, so I was an outlier. Never totaled anything or had any major issues. I think the most important thing is getting something safe.

My first car was a 67 Camaro, but I bought it myself and paid for my own insurance (on my parents policy of course).
I don't think it would have lasted 6 months if it hadn't been my money paying for everything! Young male behavior is one of many reasons I'm glad I only had daughters |

My daughter got her license last summer. Our plan prior to that was to "give" her my wife's 2009 VW GTI (4 door DSG) with about 175,000 miles on it. We then would buy my wife a new car and move on. Mileage was a little high on the GTI but I'd done all the maintenance since 40k miles so I knew well what condition it was in.
Unfortunately, my wife was t-boned in the rain in the way to work last summer, and the GTI was totalled; so we had to buy two cars instead of one... Got my daughter an amazing deal on a 2012 VW Jetta 2.5l SEL with low miles; fully loaded too. We got lucky since VWs weren't selling due to the diesel scandal; so we got the car for way under blue book. Now I need to find a car for my son; who gets his license in about 2 weeks... |

I gave my son my old '04 330 vert. By modern standards it isn't overpowered, has good brakes and handles well. Car was in pretty good shape, but it didn't take long for him to smash the passenger side at a gas station and tear the front bumper off on a curb. The latter more than once. Whatever you get don't get something that you will be upset if it gets dinged.
Also you might want to consider a GPS tracker for the car. They do a great job of logging locations and flagging poor driving habits. Well worth the $20 a month.

Gave my son a Kia Sorento for his first car/suv. Didn't want him to get stuck in the snow during winters. That took a dump so I gave him my Infiniti g35. Now he doesn't car if he gets stuck in the snow

first car
I graduated from high school in 1968. That summer, I was at Lake Tahoe staying in a beautiful house (not mine). The kid next door was just a year or two older than I, and had a gorgeous blood red 427 Cobra, which he offered to sell to me for $5,500.00. I begged and begged my parents, but they just laughed at me. My first car ended up being a blood red 1963 Falcon Futura that we paid $450.00 for. My parents did the right thing, as I would have killed myself within a few weeks of owning that Shelby! A safe, slow car is what every teenager should get for a first car!

My first car was the the middle car on the NYC subway. I wasn't fortunate to have parents who could buy me a car. However, they instilled a good work ethic in me, so I was able to buy my first car, on my own.

That was the same thing I got for my first car; a bus pass from NYC Public Schools. My parents could afford to purchase a car, but not the insurance. My rides said Bx1 and Bx10.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Yes, that Cobra is worth a fortune today. But it wouldn't be worth much if I had stuffed it into a concrete bridge abutment on the Pasadena Freeway at 130 mph!!! If my parents had bought it for me, it would have only been a matter of time before that happened! I was 17 after all, and not only thought I would live forever, but that I was the next Jim Clark or Graham Hill. Dumb!

Lucky teenagers.
This thread reminds me of that joke I've heard: "Dear parents, school is fine... but I must admit I am a little embarrassed to park my Lamborghini at the campus while everyone else takes the train...." "Oh dear, why didn't you say anything sooner? Dad's buying you a train as we speak!" My kids are getting no cars from me. Except maybe as inheritance when I die. If they don't work for it, it has no value to them, plain and simple. |

My daughter's first car was a new 2010 X1. Two years ago I got her a 2015 GMC Canyon. We just traded that out for a 2018 Audi Q3. The latter two are 4x4 because she has the vehicles with her at college on the rainy and snowy east coast.
